   Jonathan G. Hiatt died last Sat. at Ocean Beach, Calif at the age of 82 years.  Mr. Hiatt was one of Anderson County pioneers, having come here at an early age.  He and Mrs. Hiatt lived here until sometime over a year ago when
they moved to Norman, Okla., and then to Calif.  Mr. Hiatt was a veteran of the Civil War, Interment was at Ocean Beach, Calif.

died age 82, served Civil War 1861, Volunteer, Co. A, 2nd KS Cal. Mustered out 1865  From History of Kansas by Andreas 1883, pg 1329

Moved July 1858, Anderson Co., KS with his father.  He bought land 4 miles from Garnett, KS to farm.
He was a Grocer and Liveryman, in 1852 Agriculture, Anderson Co., KS  He worked in grocery business for 18 months, livery business for 6 months, then saleman between Jan 1 1879 to Feb 1882.  H ejoine din merchancise business with C. W. Durstine who died and his his interest sold to L. T. Lanter in 1882.
In 1858 lived with his father in Anderson Co. KS

Newspaper -  Jan 5, 1883, says J. G. Hiatt was one of the men from Monroe nominated as deligate to State Temperance Convention in Topeka, Jan 9th.

Newspaper - Jan 16, 1883, We are informed  We are informed that J. G. Hiatt has been granted a pension which dates back to 1864.

Newspaper - Anderson Co. Republican  April 25, 1884, J. G. Hiatt appointed on the finance and Streets and Allys committees.
July 4th J. G. Hiatt is listed on the Anderson County Officals list as a County Commissioner.

March 6, 1891,  The Rachett Store has been sold to J. G. Hiatt.  We understad he will move the store to the north side.

Newspaper: Republican Plaindealer  -  Nov. 13, 1896.  JG Hiatt has moved to his new residence in Chapman's Addition.

Newspaper, Oct. 14, Yesterday jG Hiatt received word of hte death of Mrs. Hiatt's sister Mrs. Elias Norris, age 77 at Slinas, CA.

Newspaper -  Republican Plaindealer  Oct. 23, 1919, Mr. and Mrs. JG Hiatt hafe sold their home on Weset Seventh Avenue and will go to OK on extended visit. Mrs. Hiatt came here when a small girl and Mr. Hiatt when a young man.

Newspaper - Garnett Review - April 1920, A Birthday dinner was given for Mr. and Mrs. JG Hiatt at Norman, Oklahoma on March 24th.  Mr. Hiatt is 82 yeasr of age and Mrs. Hiatt was 80 yeasr old on Jan 1st. These Anderson County Pensioners are hale and hearty.

Newspaper Dated Oct 14, 1920. Jonathan G. Hiatt died last Sunday at Ocean Beach, CA, at the age of 82.  mr. Hiatt was one of the Anderson County Pioneers, having come here from an early day.  He and Mrs. Hiatt lived here until something over a year ago when they moved to OK and then to CA.  Mr. Hiatt was a veteran of the Civil War. Internment was at Ocean Beach, CA.

His probate left everytyhing to his wife, Mary, from Gerry Usher/Leonard by way of Darlene Brown.  (DB)

   Stewart T. Hiatt departed this life at Welda, on Saturday morning, OCt 29, 1892, after a lingerling illness of several weeks.  He was born in Wayne County, Ind., Feb 8, 1840, and at 12 years of age, removed with his parents to Madison County, Iowa.  There they remained until 1858, when they came to Anderson County, Kansas, where he has since resided.  Early in 1861, he with other, was called out, and served in a company of militia along the Missouri border at intervals during that summer.  On the 6th day of October, 1861, he volunteered in Co. E. of the 2d Kansas Infantry, and served in that capacity
until about March, 1862, when the regiment was reorganized and became the 2d Kansas Cavalry, and he was assigned to Co. A of that regiment, and served three years, being mustered out on April 27, 1865.  Some time in 1872 he united with the Christian church, in which he apparently lived a consistent life.  He leaves a wife and eight children to mourn their loss.

He was baptized Christen Church 1872. In 1858 moved with the family to Anderson Co., KS

The Old Soldiers of WElda Township met Sept.  30, and organized as follows:  Several men .........  inckluding H. A. Orwig 2nd Lt.    ................ and S. T. Hiatt and a number of other names. Etc.

1883 Newspaper Anderson County (KS) Republican pg. 60- Wela - SS.T> Hiatt and J. M. Hedricks, Blacksmith shops.  The town is only 3 years old and has a population of over 200.

1889 December  FOR invalid Pension:  Sept. 30, Enrolled as Prv. on 7 Oct. 1861 in 2nd Reg. KS Cal.  Commanded by Cpt. John Johnson and was honorably discharged at Little Rock, Ark. on 14 April 1865.  Age 22, 5 ft 10 Inches, dark complextion, wiht black harir and hazel eyes.  On teh march from ____________ KS to the Rey in SW MO on or about the last of AUg. or first of Sept. 1862, Co. A and D had been on detatched service and were returning to the Rey whcih was in Southwester MO wer were ordered to water our horses in a bogus swamp.  My horse stepped into a swampy place and there was brush around and he was bout to mire.  Thjinking I could reileve him by dismounting I forgot to unfasten my carbine from the saddle and in jumping, it caught and held me down. The horse struggled and stepped one foot on myleft hip and one on my left shoulder and pressed me down into the water and mud.  I was heped out as soon as possible but my shoulder and hip were so badly injured that I had to be elped on my horse for some time afterward and have always been stiff and lame in the left shoulder an dhip since.  I also claim for chornicd diarrhoea contracted in summer of 1863 at Springfiled MO.  I had no treatment in the Hospital except at the sick call in the mornigns.  Causd by lack of variety in diet. Also for deeafness in right ear caused by heavy firing at battle of Pearie Grove Dec. 7th 186_.

   All of this comes from Raymond Edwin Bolby's book, in the 1993 publication, BOWLBY FAMILIES IN ENGLAND and AMERICA, Vol. I, part 2, pg. 23
  Hannah E. BOWSLBY (12th Generation from Rychard and Alison Bolbie, early 1500's) was the second daughter of Wilson P. S. and Rosannah (Helms) BOWLSBY, born in Madison Co., IA, about 1855.  She was listed as living with her uncle William H. BOWLSBY as well as living with Emmanuel and Mary SULGROVE of Douglas Co., Township, in teh Madison Co., IA, Census of 1870. In both places she was listed as being eighteen, but was probably only fifteen.  Hannah E. Bowlsey married S. T. HIATT on 28 Dec 1874.....  Thank you "very" much! Cynthia Katzman Bowlby
