I have been an avid cemetery hunter for at least 35+ years, My Mom had us (her children) off gallivanting cemeteries when she started researching my fathers Sutphin clan in the 70's   While growing up many a weekend was spent looking for long lost graveyards and feeling the excitement of finding the final resting place of our relatives.. All of her children when traveling still go through the local phone books for any Sutphin residents..lol  What she has instilled into us is a gift in my eyes.. Thank you Mom for being my inspiration and my hero  I Have been working on my husbands genealogy for around 12 years .  I happily accept any help ,corrections, new Friends and family members.  We are all on the same quest of finding our forefathers and all our kin :)  Seeking all Relations to Hendrick Sutphin line As well as Armentrout, Blackwell , Burns , McCown and those elusive Tyler's of Rockbridge and surrounding areas..lol  A lot of the pictures I have posted are newer graves, when I cemetery hunt, I take pictures of all the stones and resting places new and old, that time or weather will allow I never wish to upset any of the families..I simply am trying to save some steps for future genealogist and maybe allow a family member far away to see a picture of their kins final resting place.  Many of the stones I attempt to photo document need a little enhancement to read the names and dates..due to the controversy of shaving creams, chalk and other sources..I use Herbal Choice, an all natural shave cream.  Thanks goes to my partner in Crime.  My Snake & spider killer ,Bee and Black Bear chaser offer.  My Hubby :)

In all of us there is a hunger, marrow deep, to know our heritage - to know who we are and where we came from. Without this enriching knowledge, there is a hollow yearning. No matter what our attainments in life, there is still a vacuum, an emptiness, and the most disquieting loneliness. -- Alex Haley Let your heritage not be lost, but...gather...the hidden and preserve it for thy children....Bequeath it as a memory, treasure and blessing. -- Christian Metz> (1846) "Family history gives individuals a sense of heritage and a sense of responsibility in carrying out a legacy their ancestors began."-U.S. Senate Resolution "How will our children know who they are if they don't know where they come from."-John Steinbeck, The Grapes of Wrath “The minds of men are naturally moved to know something of their progenitors.” a circular printed in 1846 by the New England Historical and Genealogical Society. On Thu, Feb 21, 2013 at 4:02 AM, YES, Thanks Larry and group, I agree,
Since you have the master data base when you hit a small bump in the road I am glad you share some with us instead of doing it all yourself, giving you time to work on other names.
It was fun to look at the information and put it all together with you
We all are a team, making it all work together. Maybe finding more team members along their lines assisting you in adding even more cousins to the database.
I find it a real joy working with the master
While you are working on the HH book names, I am adding names of Hiatt and others from 1940 census and find a grave site that will tie in to the modern kin of same groups, together we will find the links and rejoice forever
God bless you and yours
BHH

A great days payback, thanks to all who have been so gracious, this is one of those links that would have been so hard to find, but together we did it, well, you did it, thanks.
Hi, okay, this is what I have come to so far, will look into dates and other things further. BUT with input so far, I can assure that this is the correct family. The date I have of 7 Feb 1897 must be the marriage date, all else fits. Every name fits perfectly of every child. Also, Lucy A. is the same as Lucy Annis Bowman, all fits.
This is a marvelous example of the way we are all able to work together, to use a single combined family file and share, refer to the RIN numbers and names to share data, work and research. Here has been a name hanging with no further reference, so far we have tied into a given person. BUT further, with ties from others here, we also come up with children, census, families but also lineages.
ALSO FOUND JEFFERSON DAVIS HIATT IN 1920 CENSUS WITH SAME CHILDREN, WIFE IS LUCY AND JEFFERSON WAS BORN 1862, ALSO LISTED ON 1880 CENSUS WITH WIFE AND DAUGHTER

I HAVE A DEATH COLLECTION, SOCIAL SECURITY INDEX AND VIRGINIA GRAVE INDEX AND 1940 CENSUS THAT LIST A HOBERT CLARENCE HIATT B 21 MAR 1911 D 10 AUG 1989, PROBABLY SAME CHILD? BUT HIS MOMS NAME IS LUCY ON 1930 CENSUS AS HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD SINCE DAD PROBABLY DIED BEFORE THEN. BROTHER NAME IS GLENN J HIATT BORN 1921. AND SIS VECIL V BORN 1914, SOUNDS LIKE SAME FAMILY
Larry, Rootsweb has him as a son of John Hiatt b. 1830 and Mary Boyd, grandson of Josiah Hiatt b. 1785 in Guilford, NC and Absilla White....I don't have any of them in my file......but being from Guilford, NC, they have to be connected.....Del

John (father) moved with his parents in 1759 from Va to Orange Co., NC. In 1797 the family moved to Westfield Monthly Meeting (Quaker), in Surry County, NC and in 1804 moved to Mt. Pleasant Mo. NC, married Absxilla White in NC in 1880 in Patrick Co., Va. They were living in Patrick in 1850. The 1850 Census, Patrick Co., Va, listed Josiah Hiatt, 68, farmer. His children were Esther, John, William, Mary, Anderson, Ephraim, Nancy (others?). His son John is my ancestor, which comes on down to his children Jefferson Davis, Josiah, Mintura and Tallie. Jefferson Davis Hiatt is my ancestor. His children were Stacy, Elsi, Melissa, John Armon, Lawrence Noel, Maud, Ida, Glen, Okra, Hobart and Vera. I have all the information on this line if you're interested. John Armon Hiatt was my ancestor. Then my father, Russell Edwin Hiatt who is now 83. All of my Hiatt ancestors are buried at Willow Hill Moravian Church in Patrick Co., Va. E-mail me privately if you need all the original 4 John Hiatt's information.

Since Maza doesn't show up as Josiah's child except possibly as a ?, I thought it best to start with county records.  Unfortunately no one in my family has any  family information before Maza on the Hiatt side.  Again, thank you and I will post more info as I get it.

County records  should clear that up next visit to Patrick  County. She married a Boyd (James "Jim" Boyd)  They are buried in the old Willow Hill  Cemetery. Do you know where the cemetery is  located in Patrick County?

Classification:  Edited: 23 Aug 2006 3:59PM GMT   Surnames:    Very Well - Willow Hill is a Moravian Church just across the Virginia line north of Mount Airy, NC, on the Ward's Gap Highway. Going North you come to a three way intersection, and it is my recollection you take the right hand road which leads on in to Willow Hill. If you get that far, you can ask anyone. Where are you located? If her real name was Mary it would fit in.

Classification:  Edited: 20 Jan 2003 12:23AM GMT   Surnames:    Hi Carol Faye!  I'm thinking we are related somehow (me by Marriage, as my husband is the direct ancestor of Stephen Hiatt, brother to your John, Faye.   I have a genealogy done in 1956, but does not list this younger Josiah. The last birth I have for John and Phebe Thatcher is Martha in 1782.  FYI: I have a Josiah Hiatt born of Stephen Hiatt, b. 7/23/1818. Could this be anyone's Josiah? Probably named for the Josiah, youngest brother of Stephen John.  Question for Faye: Do you have any genealogy information for the immigrant ancestor, John Hiatt, born 1674 somewhere in England? I have who he married (Mary Smith and her parents names) and his children and where they settled, but no information from back in England.  Thanks for the info.

Edited: 23 Aug 2006 3:59PM GMT      I guess we have cousins all over the country, ha! The only thing I have back of the original John Hiatt is that his parents are listed as Johannes Magdalena Heidt which I presume was the original spelling. What do you know about the Pocahontas thing. Guess what, I went to Willow Hill today just out of curiosity as I wanted to take pictures of some gravesites. I did look around for the Boyds. There are some in there but nothing that sounded familiar. I wonder if someone has a list of all the graves in the cemetery. Are you sure it's Willow Hill? There are several other cemeteries in the general vicinity, Oak Grove for one I think is the name and another one, which I can't think of the name of right now. Send me your individual e-mails and I will forward you the information I have. I have a great aunt who is in a nursing home who is the daughter of Jefferson Davis Hiatt, who was a brother to the second Josiah, son of John Hiatt b. c1830 and as soon as I can, I will contact her and see what her memory is.
