The Hiett and Fichter Family of Brown Co., Ohio by Bruce Grimes.
The date on his tombstone; alternate date: July 14, 1803.  At about age four, he was brought to Huntington Township in Brown County by his parents. His father died when he was about thirteen, at which time he must have helped his widowed mother run the farm, which his father had cleared out of the virgin forest.

A Double Marriage between Brother and Sister -- The Gilbert and Hiett Families

On June 13, 1824, Samuel Hiatt married Sarah Gilbert, who like himeself, had been brought to Huntington Township, when she was very young.  Later in the same year, December 1824, Samuel's sister Letitia married Sarah's brother John.  The Gilberts came from Berkeley County, Virigina (now West Virigina) the same part of Virginia from which the Hietts came.  These two families may have been neighbors and had contact in Virginia previous to coming to Ohio.

An examination of Brown Co., land records show that in the 1830's Samuel and Sarah, by a combination of inheritance and by buying his siblings' inherited interest in the family farm, took over most, or at least a large part, of the original 309 acres of land owned by his father.  His mother, Mary Hiett, had control of some of the family farm; she seems to have run her own house until in the census of 1850 she is living with Samuel and Sarah; in 1857 they buried her in the family cemtery, which was in one of the fields high on a hill overlooking the farmland.

At least three of their sons (Samuel, Griffith and John) enlisted late in 1861, responding to the call from Lincoln for more troops.  All three joined the 70th Ohio Volunteer Infantry organized in Adams County.  About March of 1862 their unit went down the Ohio River to become part of the Army of the Tennessee which saw its first combat at the bloody battle of Shiloh in April 1862.  Many men became ill from poor conditions in the camps; this happened to Griffith, and possibly Samuel.  Samuel was released because of disability later in 1862; Griffith spent a long time in an army hospital in Iowa, but eventually completed his three-year term of duty as did his brother John.  Griffith and John came home in Octobter 1864 from Chattanooga after the Campaign against Atlanta.  Just days after the war ended, Samuel died, cause is unknown to me, but I wonder if the cause of his death might not have been war-related.

Following Samuel's death on August 15, 1868, his farm seems to have passed down to his daughter Ruth who married Ephraim Martin.  Later on the farm passed to Ephraim and Ruth Martin's daugther, Lorena, who married Jim Stephenson, thus it became the Stephenson farm.

They lived in Russellville where Calvin was at one time a hotel keeper.  Calvin's father, Russell Shaw, came to Brown Co., from New York State and bought some land which he divided into plots for sale.  His subdivision, named after himself, became the village of Russellville.
In 1850, Calvin 43 and is 43 and is listed in the census with seven children from twins age 20 to a one year old daughter, Hannah.  The mother, Elizabeth is not listed; did she die in previous year, maybe giving birth to the youngest?

From a newspaper clipping - 1895 - FUNERAL OF JOHN HIETT (See No. (801.) ).:
“He Was Well Known and Highly Honored as One of Tippecance Country’s Pioneers.

“The funeral services of John Hiett were held at the Sugar Grove Methodist church Tuesday, July 9, at 10:30 a.m. The death of this pioneer of Tippecanoe country had occurred at his home, Saturday, July 6, the result of erysipelas. The services were conducted by Rev. G.W. Switzer, of Brazil, Ind. assisted by Rev. B.H. Beals, the pastor, and Rev. W.E. McKenzie, of Shawnee Mound. An immense gathering of friends and relatives was present to pay their respects to one who was held in highest esteem by all who knew him. John Hiett was born in Adams country, Ohio, October 26, 1808. His ancestral line was marked for intellectual force and purity of character. Mr. Hiett emigrated to Indiana in 1835 and settled at Sugar Grove. He was the last resident survivor of a noble band of pioneers who settled in Jackson township and by enterprise and frugality built the splendid homes and estates which dot this section. In 1848 he was married to Mary Frances Davidson, his surviving widow. His remaining children are: William Hiett, Wolcott, Ind.; Phillip Hiett, North Bend, Nebraska; Dr. F.M. Hiett, Red Oak, Iowa; Mrs. Susana Cartwright, Del-phi, Ind.; Emery R. Hiett, Toledo, Ohio; Dr. George Hiett, Pittsburg, Pa.; Mrs. Louella Hiett McMillin, Roche Harbor, Washington; Mrs. Anna Hiett Switzer, Michigan City, Ind. His grand sons served as pall bearers. Mr. Hiett was known by all to be a man of sterling integrity and of noble principles. His  force of character made him known far beyond his quiet neighborhood. He was a member of the Methodist church, of which he had been a supporter for many years. He was a charter member in the Masonic Lodge near his home, and this order participated in the final rites. Thus, in his 867th year, has passed away one whose services to the commonwealth cannot be overestimated --- though much of his life belongs to a private record, it is nevertheless imperishable.”   (R112).

The Hiett and Fichter Families of Brown Co., Ohio in the Nineteenth Century by Bruce Grimes.   After 1834, when Elizabeth died John sold his rights to the family farm to his brother Samuel and he moved west to Tippicanoe Co., Ind., where his siter Letitia, and her husband John Gilbert had already moved.
