John RIPPER

Line in Record @I362@ (RIN 282683) from GEDCOM file not recognized:
OCCU an engineer

In the 1841 census John is shown at home with his mother in Redruth, John being aged 10.

In the 1851 census at 68 George Street in Stoke Dameral is Catherine Ripper aged 56, a widow.  Living with her is John Ripper (22 years old, unmarried son and engine fitter born in St. Austell) & Lavinia Ripper (17 years old, unmarried daughter and milliner born in Redruth).

The IGI shows a John Ripper baptised in St Austell 26 Dec 1830, the son of William and Catherine. There is no marriage showing in the IGI but the census states that Catherine was born in Gwennap. An investigation of the Gwennap and St Austell registers and banns book may reveal fuller details of this marriage.

The John Ripper who marries Mary Cullum and becomes an engineer (at one time the Chief engineer of a tugboat in the Naval Dockyard, Devonport in Plymouth), has a first son called William, a second son John and then a daughter Catherine Jane.

Freemason of Devonport lodge, Elms no 1212.

It was stated by Peter Ripper, grandson to John & Mary, without any prompting that John came from Cornwall - probably the Redruth or Camborne district.

John's wife Mary was baptised in 1828 and it is reasonable to expect that he and his wife were of similar age.

1881 census, Stoke Damerel - aged 52, engineer in HM Dockyard.

In the English Probate Calendar 1858-1930 is recorded the administration of his estate of £30-10- 0 being awarded to his wife Mary Elizabeth Ripper.  At the time of his death he lived at 5 Fitzroy Terrace in Devonport.
