Alfred Hedrick TIPTON

Alfred Hedrick Tipton born Aug. 23, 1846, son of Salina (Hedrick) and John  B. Tipton, He was born in  Tennessee, County and City unknown.

    He homesteaded S. W. 1/4 Sec. 25, T18N R19W on Nov. 2, 1885, Certif.

    He married Naomi Etta Straw Aug. 17, 1889 at Broken Bow, Custer County, N. E.,

    He was 41 and she was 20. Have a copy of their marriage record. This information from Custer County, N. E. Historical Society.

    Death Certificate states that he died April 14, 1923 at Broadus, Power River, county, MT. and that he was a Invalid cripple. Lived in city last 10 years, He had a brother William fought in civil War. Sister Mary (Tipton) Dunlap.

    They both resided at Elton, NE  a post office about 12 miles northeast of Broken Bow which was discontinued in 1926 so it no longer shopws on any maps. It was never a village so the Straws and Tiptons probably came to Broken Bow to get their necessities. Information from Custer County.

William Saul TIPTON

William was physically strong with a lot of drive, determination and resourefulness, he also went west spending time around Sidney, Nebraska and Fort Collins, Colorado. When about 25 years of age he determined to improve his education. He attended school in Oakland, Iowa, obtaining collage entrance requirements and entered the school of law at Iowa City. He was however unable to adjust to the sedentary life of a student and hid health impaired to the extent that he gave up the Idea. He also suffered from a tendency to ulcers of the Stomach, anothe family malady. ( He also became quite deaf in his later years.) He followed farming setting on a fram adjacent to his brother John, in Potta County, Iowa. He was active in civil affairs, director of the local school, member of the Grange and farmer's union and was a Mason. Also typical of the Tipton his most outstanding trait was probably his love for his family. He worked hard to goal of educating his children. Probably one of the prodest days was the day his son became an M. D.
