On January 4, 1851, In Upshur County, Texas William Tipton states on oath; "On this the 4th day of January A. D. thousand eight hundred fifty-one personally appeared before me an acting Justice of the Peace with in and for the County and State afore said, William Tipton , aged fifty-seven years, a resident of the County and State afore said, who being duty sworn according to the law declares he is the identical William Tipton who was a Private soldier in the Company commanded by Captain Joseph Holmes in the first quota of Militia in General Simon Perkins Brigade of Ohio Militia in the War with Great Britain declared by the United States on the 18 th day of June 1812, that he was drafted at Steubenville, Jefferson County on or about the first of July A. D. 1812 as will appear by hios original Certificate of Discharge herewith presented or by the muster rolls of said Company. He makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the bounty land to which he may be entitled under the Act granting bounty land to certain officers and Soldiers who may been engaged in the military service of the United States, passed September 25, 1850
