John Craig Tipton family came to California, from Kentucky setting in Red Bluff, California, where he was in the freighting  business, before going to Montana.
The family left Red Bluff, California, for Montana on june 4, 1878 going by cover wagon. The family of John, his wife Aurelia Himrod (Ryan) and five sons,. They arrived in the vicinity of Helena, Montana in October of 1878, during the Bannack War. They settled on a homestead near White Sulphur Springs, Montana. During the time they lived on the homestead, two girls were born. After the death of his wife John Craig moved back to California in 1905.

He was one of the leading and representative men of the community, and was honored with local office, serving as assessor and treasurer in Pleasant Township for several years, terms,
