See notes under William A. Tipton. tombstone reads: Gone but not forgotten David was never married
Pinkney was murdered for making fun of another man's name. They wereat a log rolling and Pinkney was a log-roller. they were telling jokesand started to joke about another man's name. this man got mad and toldthem he was going home to get his gun to kill them. They thought he wasjust talking but the next day he came up on Pinkney and shot him, killinghim.
I hope to go to Asheville and get a copy of the letter she wrotegiving permission for Viney and James Castleberry to marry.
Mahaley Flowers she came to Alabam from North Carllina. Married JohnLowe, to this union they had John and Pinkney. John married Nan Harrisonto this union they had John, Tom, Shelly, Dora, and Clurcy. John marriedEver Martin. Tom married Ada Lee. Shelley married Emma Clifton. Doramarried Will Garrett. Clurcy married Jace Brown, Pinkney married RoseAnn Brewer, to this union were Vinnie, she married Jim Castleberry.Drucilla married Will Levell, Sally married William Masters. Bettymarried Walter Spruill, he died then she married Chris Norris. they bothwent to Texas and died there. Vinnie and Sally died here and was buriedat Mt. Pisgah Cemetary. Grandmother Lowe had a twin sister Sally, shemarried a Golden and went to Mississipi. Back in those days they hadwhat they call log-rollings Pinkney was at one of those log-rollings ascommon. A bunch of men got together. They go to telling jokes, so theytell a joke on this man (i never learned his name) and it made him mad.He told them he was going home, get his gun and kill everyone, naturallythey paid no mind. All went home. Grandpa Pinkney next morning fixed aturn of corn and went to the mill on his way home he was the first onethat man met, he just up and shot Grandpa Lowe. Back in those days theyhad no law protection and anything like that, they formed a possy. Sothey formed this possy and went after him, back in those days if anythinglike that happend if they could get across the Mississippi River in Texasthey'd be home free, so that was what he was trying to do, but the possywas too close to him, they shot him attempting to swim the river. Backthen people had no way of travel, only what they called Bowe Train wagonsso Grandma and her four children, Aunt Betty only 9 months old and Sally18 or 19 months old and Aunt Sally Golden and her family came back here.Grandpa Brewer gave Grandma Lowe 40 acres of land with a big one room andside room and front porch. grandma and her girls plowed an ox stear tomake aliving. Back they there wasn't no stock law. You had to fencearound your fields. One day one of them, I didn't learn which one wasplowing so here came a bunch of cattle going down the side of the fence. So the old stear they were plowing he proceeds to go down the side of thefence with them. Whichever one that was plowing drug them too. OldUncle Billie Dunlap happened along and saw what was going on. He wasawfully good to Grandma, and came over ever so often to see about them.He asked Grandma to marry him she said no. I'm not bringing no man overmy girls. Grandma walked 3 miles to Eden and washed for a Mrs. Kendricksand she paid her in flour, and ever so oftening in sifting this there wasa 50Cents or a dollar. The neighbors was so good to her, in the winterwhen the cold weather came they'd cut fire wood and pile on her porch upto the roof. Well Mahaley she married a Norris, (I don't know his name)and had Tom, Ben, and Amanda, back then they had no telephones no way ofcommunication. She found out he had a wife and children on the otherside of Coosa River over near Talladega, Civil War was going on at thistime. So she turned him over to the authority and they came and got himput him in the war. That was the lot of him. Never returned. She livedwith her son John Lowe. She had money 6 or 7 hundred dollars in gold, dont know how much of other money. She wore gowns and wrappers all thetime and had pockets in those gowns she kept her money in and when shegot sick a day or two before she died she gave the money to John and inthe division Mama got $20.00 she bought her a cooking stove with it. Sheis buried in Macedonia Cemetary.
