The following are letters received by my ggrandfather, Jabez B. Tipton, from French Tipton of Richmond, KY. I think any decendents of Jabez Murray Tipton may find them interesting. Note: this Jabez B. Tipton was the son of Jabez M.'s son Joel.May 23, 1899
Dear Cousin--- If you are a son, or grandson, or great grandson of Thomas Tipton, you are related to me, for he was my father's brother. I hope you will write to me and tell me all about the family from the time uncle Tommy left Kentucky down to the present time. Tell me what they have been doing all the long time, and how many of them there are, so far as you know, and all about it. Uncle Ninus, one of the eighteen children, is yet alive, and the only one that is.

Mr. Jabez B. Tipton
My dear Cousin--- Thanks for you interesting letter of the 26th. So you are my first cousin. I will give you a sketch of the family, or that part of it, that remained in Dentucky. Than you must give me a similar sketch of the Missouri end of it.
DARIUS B. was the youngest of the 18 children. Born 1812; died 1883. Lived near Boonesborough in Madison county. Farmer, Democrat, and not a church member. Four children--- George, FRENCH, Tabitha, and Duke. George a surveyor, then Rebel soldier. School teacher, farmer. Went to the West Indies, 1880, and died there, 1889, having been governor of the Island of Navassa nearly all that time. Left two sons and two daughters in this county, who yet live here, and three of them married. George democrat, but not a church member. I have been everything and am everything yet. School teacher, drummer, lawyer, judge of a court, twenty five years an editor, and in the internal revenue service, author, &c. Am now the editor of the meanest republican newspaper in Kentucky and the only one in the 8th congressional district. Am an Episcopalian. Married 10 years, but no children. Have travelled in Europe, Mexico, in Manitoba and the North-west and all over the United States, east of the Rockies. I am the only Tipton ever in Kentucky with the college degree of LL.B. Tabitha married an Irvine and lives in Winchester with half a dozen children ranging from 6 to 20 years. She is a democrat and "Campbellite." Duke is a salesman in a paint house in Lexington, and occasionally preaches a "Campbellite" sermon. Has one son. Is a democrat.
NINUS P., the next oldest, born 1809, lives in Montgomery county. Nearly helpless, and the only one of the 18 alive. He has three sons living--- Dr. Waller practicing in Wolfe county, wife and several children, Baptist. Letcher, bachelor, living with his father, Baptist. James D., living in Mt. Sterling, a farmer, wife but no children. Sam died a bachelor.
ELIJAH, the nest oldest, died young.
Clemmy, nest oldest, married Richard Webb, and lived long in Estill County, then removed to Kansas and both died there. Had two sons and one daughter. Preston and family went with them. Julia Ann married an Ashcraft and also went, and he died without children. William, a farmer, represented Estill in the legislature, and was provost marshal of Irvine during the war of '61. Lives in Clark county. All republicans and I believe Baptists. William has one daughter, she married.
MARY, usually known as Polly, died an old maid in Montgomery county, lived with Uncle Ninus.
Then comes aunt Sally, whom you mentioned.
ELHANAN, nest, born 1799, lived in Madison, and died about 1864. Three times married. No children by last wife. By other tow had four sons and two daughters--- all dead but Leannal who married Smith and lives in Rockcastle with large family. Elizabeth married Powell and removed West with several children. Abner, farmer had large family and went west. Sam, house carpenter, married twice here and left one daughter who married and went West. He died from exposure in Prices's army at battle of Pea Ridge. Had married in Missouri and left children. Jabez B., house carpenter, farmer, merchant, trader and distiller, had numerous children. Died about 1868, and his family went to Missouri. John, woolcarder and farmer, died several years ago and left wife and children, some of whom are married. Uncle Elhanan was Baptist and democrat, and his children all democrats, but divided between Baptists and Campbellites.
Then comes uncle Joel.
MARTHA, usually known as Patsy, died an old maid.
Then comes aunt Betsy.
Then comes uncle Daniel.
Then comes uncle Thomas,
ANN died an old maid.
Jael died an old maid. Ann and Jael bought out the interests of the other children in the old home, near Foxtown, about 1845---47 and lived together, uncle Elhanan's children lived with them. Finding the old deed made by your father was the first I ever knew where he lived. Found it last month.
ESTOM comes next. He went to Mo.
These are all of grandfather's last wife's children.
ALEXIS, youngest of first wife's children, removed to Montgomerycounty, was sheriff, a farmer, and got rich. Methodist. Had 10 children. One of these Jabez M., lives at Covington, Tenn., is a banker, and has children and grand children. All methodist, but mixed in politics---I mean uncle Alexis's family. One daughter married O'Donohough of Greencastle, Indiana, and has children and grand children.. One daughter married a Reynolds, and a son, Ed, lives in Missouri. Burwell has a daughter, Mrs. Bettie Lindsay, who lives in Sturgeon, Mo. William went West.
JOHN died young.
MOSES removed to Shelby countyu, a farmer, had a large family and County Judge W.H. Tipton is his grandson.
Alexis and Ninus both married Tiptons, but not closely related to them or to each other. Aunt Sally married a relative of uncle Ninus's wife, named Tipton.
The Ohio and Indiana branch of the old Maryland stock have beat us holding offices, having been generals, judges, congressmen, United States senators, &c.
Now, if you are not too tired, let me hear from you in about the same size and manner.

My dear cousin Jabez:
I am glad to hear from you again. Am also glad that you have done some travelling.
I should have said in addition, concerning myself, that I am a Mason, a Knight of Pythias, and a member fo the League of American Wheelmen, and have a wheel I have ridden 7246 miles---that's a tremendous distance, isn't it.
Our grandfathe was JABEZ MURRAY TIPTON, born in Maryland, 1754, died in Madison county, KY., 1818. He was revolutionary soldier, and a son of John Tipton, who was the son of Thomas Tipton. I have not yet discovered when the first one came to America; am trying to do so. The Tiptons of Ohio and Illinois are close kin to us, but the old families of those of Tennessee are not close. But uncle Alexis now has some decendents there.
In what towns in South Dakota and Wisconsin do your sons live and how long have they lived there?
Do you ever think of coming to Kentucky to see us? I have never been able to find anything about your mother's family in the county. There are many Todd families here, but I cannot find to which she belonged. Can't you tell me something about her people?
