James moved to Bedford County , Pennsylvania from Somerset asa young man. The county line fluctuated and ran through the middle  of the area the families settled in. He lived in Bedford for 16 years. Then took his  family overland with two teams and effects to North Illinois in 1863. they moved on to Anderson  County , Kansas, in 1865. The farm homestead was three and a half miles north and a half mile west of Westphalia.
