David and his brothers did not communicate with each other.

David, together with three brothers were veterans of the Civil War serving in the 16th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. One of the brothers died in Andersonville prison, The others survived. The family says they marched with Sherman to the Sea. They also participated in the Battle of Five Points, commouly called the Battle of Fort Fizzle.

All thers Tipton men from David on down were big strong men. They were fasrmers and barn buildres. David brother Jonathan was called the "Bull" because of his chest and neck development. His favorite trick was to grip a keg full of nails with his teeth and flip it over his head.

David and his sons all stood six foot three and over. Charles was six foot eight. Robert L. is the shortest, being just six foot even. William's favorite trick was to flip a drilling bit, weighing about 1200 lbs. end over end into a derrick floor, or to pick up a device known in the oil fields as a "setof tars" weighing 600 to 800 lbs. and walk over and load them on a truck bed.  He was well kmown for his feats of strenght thoughout the oil fields in Ohio, West Virginia, and Peensylvania.
