Toussaint CHARBONNEAU

[Toussaint Charbonneau.FTW]

Toussaint and his brother were fur trappers and traders for some time from Lake Ontario to Lake Superior and in the James Bay region.  Finally, he came from Lake of the Woods down the Red River of the North and west to the Upper Missouri and the Winnipeg area.  He lived there for 10 years.  He took up residence among the Metharta Minnetaree's, and lived there for 5 years.

John MacDonnell says he had aboriginal love affairs with 2 other men, before he set off to court a beautiful 1/2 indian daughter of Foutreau's.  2 months later the old indian squaw caught him raping the girl and took an oar to his backside.  Foutreau said he "highly deserved this punishment".  He was well known by the Indians and given no less than 5 names, all slightly derisive.

Chief of the Little Village, Man who Possesses Many Gourds, Great Horse From Abroad, Forest Bear, and one not very refined, translated to Squaw's Man or more literally, Man-Part Never Limp.

He was very abusive to his women and received his greatest delight from raping very young girls, as was the case with the little girl that he won in a Game of Hands, Sacajawea.  She was about 12 years old.  He had an uncontrolled temper and would severely beat the women over anything.

SACAJAWEA

[Toussaint Charbonneau.FTW]

In some genealogy data, it is said that Sacajawea died 20 Dec. 1812, Fort Manuel, Montana.  We beleive this to be his other wife, who died of consumption (Tuberculosis).  The real Sacajawea died on the Wind River Indian Reservation at a very old age.

Sacajawea is also known as Grass Child,  Boinaiv, in the Salmon Eaters encampment.  The Agaiduka Shoshonis Indians.  They migrated to the Three Forks, (Montana) and spent the winter, when Sacajawea was about 8 years old and Rain Bird was about 12.  Then, the Minnetaree Indians attacked and killed many of the tribe of Shoshonis.  There were two Minnetaree villages, one is called Metaharta and the other is known as Hidatsas, People of the Willows.

(Located a little way up the Missouri River, near the modern cities of Washburn and Stanton, North Dakota, and to the west of US 83), was Mahaha, a village of the Wetersoon, the Amahami's or the Soulier Noir Indians, and 2 Mandan villages.  Furthor up the Knife River were the 2 Minnetaree villages.  Five villages all total.  The first chief of the Minnetaree's was Omsehara, the Black Moccasin.

Grass Child was given to Buzzard Beak, named Catches Two, by his tribe, and his women, Talking Goose and Antelope.  Since it was taboo to tell them her name, they named her after a little bird, Sacajawea, Bird Woman.

One evening the Old Grandfather and Catches Two was roughly teasing her and they wrestled to see who was going to relieve their needs with her, first.  Grandfather won and Catches Two raped her second.  She was only 10, maybe 11 summers old.  The women just cackled and teased her.  It was this day that a scoundrel dog became friends with her.  He protected her and stayed with her until he was accidently killed, trying to show the tribe where a coyote had drug a little child.  They thought he had did it and threw a knife at him.  She buried him like a human and left the tribe.  She mourned for quite awhile.

One day, Old Grandfather took her to a trading place and traded her for a Crow in a cage.   Her new owner was an Indian named Ahnahaway, who lost her to a Metaharta Indian, named Fast Arrow, in a game of "Arrows".

Fast Arrow's father was Red Pipe and his mother was Grasshopper.  He gave his new slave to his mother, whom wanted Sacajawea to call her mother, "Umbea".  She had a daughter, Rosebud, who was unbalanced, from being raped by their Chief, Kakoakis.

The Shaman of this tribe said that Sacajawea had wandering mocassins, and would live to a very old age.  She will see much and what she sees will be unbelievable.  He had no words to describe what it was.  This was 1802.

The Chief Kakokis gave Sacajawea to Toussaint Charbonneau, after he lost her in a Game of Hands. She was perhaps 13 years old and he was about 43.  She gave birth to a son, while she was still 13.  Toussaint named him Jean Baptiste Charbonneau.
