Shoemaker and farmer farmer of Shallow Springs, Surry, NC.!Father is William Harrison.
He had three marriages and lived in the Dobson, Mt. Airy, Pilot Mountain area of Surry Co. NC. All marriages are recorded in North Carolina Marriage bonds, 1741-1868. B. Wooten was the bondsman on the marriage to Jane and Columbus Thomps was the bondsman on his marriage to Martha.
The 1840 Surry co. NC census page 63 has Joel Harrison family. On the same page is the family of John F. Harrison.
The 1850 Surry Co. NC census North Div. (Hollow Spring) has Joel age 41 a shoemaker with $150 of real estate owned, Martha is 41, James is 18 (shoemaker), Eliza is 17, Lucind is 15, Jane is 13, Mary is 11, Martha is 8, John is 6 and Adeline is 1. All were born in NC. They live near Julius Patterson family (Eliza married James M. Patterson).
The 1860 Surry Co. NC census (Mt Airy PO) has Joel age 51 a farmer with $1125 of real estate and $2185 of personal property, Martha is 51, Jane is 22, Louisa Dorie is 18 and John is 16. All were born in NC.
Wife Martha has died and Joel has remarried by the time of the 1870 census. Joel Harrison was married to Mary Bryant on January 3, 1868 in Surry Co. NC. Joel was the son of Joseph and Maryann Harrison and Mary was the daughter of Thomas and Ruth Bryant, married by James Weedham, M.G. according to marriage records of Surry Co. NC. Their parents' names are recorded on the marriage bond.
The 1870 Surry Co. NC census (Mt. Airy PO) has Joel age 68 a farmer with $700 of real estate and $250 of personal property, Mary is 46 and keeping house and Jane is 33. Mary was born in VA. Also living with this family is Clementine Wolf age 7 born in NC, Edmund Bend age 30 a minister born in New Jersey and Mary J. Bend age 26 born in NC. Who is Clementine Wolf? She is listed before the Bend couple. Jane's name is listed as Harrison not Wolf. Living in the next dwelling is a Martin Patterson age 38 and family.
The 1880 Surry Co. NC census (Pilot PO) has Joel age 71 a farmer, Mary age 57 his wife, and Jane age 43 his daughter. Living in the next dwelling is son James and his family.
Surry County NC Will Book 6 1867-1901 page 261 contains the will of Joel Harrison. "My beloved wife (no name given) gets all my state real and personal during her lifetime or widowhood to enjoy. After my wife's death my estate is to be equally divided among Eliza W Patterson, Lucinda E Patterson, and Mary Ann Needham. I give Mary Ann Harrison $50 and Joel William Harrison my grandson $50 in place of my daughter Jane Harrison's part; I think she has enough for her part. John Harrison and S J Harrison have had their part, 50 acres of land each deeded to them; they are to have no part in my estate. Executors: My wife (name not given) and Lee Perkins. Witnesses: Martin Redman and L H Perkins. Proved by L H Perkins and Martin Redman. Probated 16 May 1887."
Check Yadkin county too for Harrison's. Yadkin created in 1850 from Surry.
Joel Harrison is listed as Eliza W. (Harrison) Patterson's father on her death certificate Clay Co. TN and is named in his will.
