His unit was commanded by Captain CharlesScott in a force led by Colonel William Byrd. It is likely that as aresult of that service, he received a grant of land from the Colony.Although he is not listed as a soldier in the Revolutionary War, recordsshow that James Taylor provided quantities of meat and one rifled gun tothe Continental Army for which he was later reimbursed. His brother'sson, Goodwyn Taylor, Jr., served during the Revolution as a Lieutenant inthe Mecklenburg County militia. On the same date he also became the guardian of KeziahDavis, an orphan of Henry Davis. This may have been Rebecca's youngerbrother. Earlier that year, on February 2, 1769, James' brother WilliamTaylor became the guardian of Sylvia Davis, another orphan of HenryDavis, which could indicate that earlier William had married Rebecca'ssister. On September 9, 1776 while living in St. James Parish, James deeded land, described by metes and bounds, to Charles Clay for 100 pounds. Rebeccasigned by her mark. The 1795 tax list for Mecklenburg County show JamesTaylor and son James as the only two free males over the age of 21 intheir household. He owned 4 slaves over 21, Stephen, Roger, George andAmy as well as 6 horses. He appears as the head of his family in the First Census Of The UnitedStates under the list of Lewis Parham. He directed that, after finishing the crop and payinghis debts, the remainder of his property be divided equally among all ofhis six children. However, from the share of Elizabeth Williams therewas to be deducted thirteen pounds (both "dollars" and "pounds" are usedin the will), forty pounds from Thomas Taylor and ten pounds from RebeccaTurner.
