Farmer.....Volunteered 20 May 1861 at Surry when he was 34. He suffered a wound in the left eye 25 May 1862 at Winchester, VA. He became blind in that eye as a result and was discharged 15 Aug 1862. Description: 5'10" tall, fair complexion, dark eyes, red hair.

He was in a Richmond VA hospital when he was taken prisoner 3 Apr 1865 and remained there until 28 May 1865... Aftesr the war the family believes he moved to Georgia and was the father of Dr. Albert Gates, president of Mt. Vernon College and Georgia Southern College at Statesboro.
