James volunteered 18 Sep 1861 at Dobson for 12 months when he was 24 years of age. He was taken prisoner by the enemy three times. First, at Roanoke Island 8 Feb 1862. On 21 Feb 1862 he was paroled at Elizabeth City. Thaken prisoner again 3-6 Jul 1863 at Gettysburg, PA, he was a POW at Fort Delaware, DEL until 18 (ct 1863 when he was sent to Point Lookout, MC. He was sent from there after parole to City Point, VA. He was taken prisoner a third time 23 Sep 1864 at Fisher's Hill, VA and was again a POW at Point Lookout until exchanged 13 Feb 1865 at Cox's Landing, James River, VA. He was aat Camp Lee near Richmond 17 Feb 1865.
