William was living in East Tenn. when the Civil War began. There he recruited a company and marched with it to Delaware whare a Co. A., it joined the 1st Regiment Delaware Vol. Infanry with Marsh as 2nd Lt. He stayed with this Union outfit for the duration and advanced to Col. His father fought on the Southern side of the war. After the war was over, William remained in Washington where he was on the original grand jury drawn to charge high treason against Jefferson Davis. He returned home and he and Mary separated. He then married Sue Tartar. Wm. moved back to Dobson abt 1878 to practice law. He bought lots in Dobson which he later sold to the Norman Brothers when he moved to Kansas. In Kansas he was prosecuting Attorney for Pottawatomie Co. in 1889-1891. He then moved to Kingfisher, OK in 1893 and died 4 months later.

In Berniece Marsh Brigg's records, Wm. moved with his parents from Surry to Wythe Co. NC in 1846. He went to common schools and then to Law School and praticed in TN and NC.
