Chris has David's death date as 1665/1673.
The Chappells have been traced from America back to England and France, where the name originated in the 10th Century. There was a man (a villain in the Portshead) who lived at the church, and when people identified him, they would say 'A La Chappell' meaning 'at the Church'. (Chappell originated in France, and came over to England with the Huguenots during the Protestant Prosecution.) Oneof this man's sons accompanied William the Conqueror in England in the Norman Conquest in 1066 and settled there on land awarded him for his service. The family prospered and owned "Copinore" -- the Manor of Portishead. This is detailedin medieval parochial record. Thomas and Martha Chappell moved to Keynsham (Bristol) in 1605. Bennett Chappell was the first Chappell to come to America fromEngland and settled in Virginia in 1585. However, it is not known what happened to him. The Chappell line in America begins with Captain John Chappell of London, England. John was owner and master of the ship Speedwell, a sister ship to the Mayflower. The Speedwell developed a leak and could not make the voyage with the Mayflower, but did sail May 28, 1635, from South Hampton for the colonyof Virginia. John Chappell's son, Thomas Sr., sailed June 23, 1635, at the ageof 23 years, to Virginia aboard the ship America. William Barker was America'sshipmaster. The ship America sailed from Gravesend, England, and reached themouth of the Temis River August 1, 1635. They proceeded directly over to cast anchor at Jamestown, Virginia because the law forbade it to break bulk before reaching there. Thomas continued on about 30 miles up river and located on the south side in Charles City County, opposite Weston and at the mouth of a creek that was named for him -- "Chappell Creek." ann whalen (awhalen@email.usps.gov or whalen@dtccom.net)

A Julius and David Patterson can be found in the 1814 Stokes co. NC, Second Reg. War of 1812. He was a Corporal, 5th Regt (Atkinsons) NC Militia.
Source of marriage in Stokes is ancestry.com - North Carolina Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868, bond #000140783, record #02 233, bondsman Jno. McMurry. Julius A. Patterson to Rachel Ward.
The 1820 Stokes Co. NC census has Julius Patterson with two males under 5 (John & James) and one female (Rachel). A James Patterson (over 45) is on the same page with a large family.
The 1830 Stokes co. NC census page 216 has Julius Patterson and family (four young males and two young females). I find no other Pattersons near but there are several Patterson families in other parts of the county.
The 1840 Henry Co. VA census page 274 has Julius Patterson age 40 to 50 with 3 younger males and 4 young females, and one female 30 to 40. On page 275 is a James Patterson age 40 to 50 with a male 15 to 20, two females 15 to 20 and one female 40 to 50. Could this be a brother or cousin of Julius?
This family was in VA in 1841 to 43. Son Wiley states VA as his birth state in three censuses. Daughter Rachel indicates VA as her birth state in the 1910 census. Daughter Mary indicates VA as borth state in the 1910 census. All other children seem to list NC as birth state. They may have been in VA as early as 1835 when daughter Mary was born. (Henry co. is adjacent to Surry co. to the north.)
The 1850 Surry Co. NC North Division (Hollow Spring) page 292 has Julius Patterson age 54 (carpenter), Rachel is 49, John R is 32 (Hempmaker), James M (tobaconist) is 31, Julius is 22 (farmer), Margarett is 20, Martesia is 18, Mary A is 15, An?nders is 13 (male), Rachael E is 11, Wiley E is 7. All were born in NC. Also in this household is John Dodson age 18 a tobacconist from VA. Living near this family is the Harrison family (James M married Eliza Harrison). On the same page is Julius's brother Wiley and family.
1860 Surry County, NC, Mt. Airy PO, has Julius Patterson age 64, occupation is Tobacconist, value of real estate owned is $2000 and value of personal property is $100. He was born in NC. Living with him is Margaret Patterson age 30, Eliza Patterson age 26, and Wiley E Patterson age 16. All were born in NC.
1870 Surry Co NC, Mt. Airy PO has J A Patterson age 72 living with son John R Patterson and family. Julius may have died Oct. 1, 1877.
Her son James indicates in the 1880 census that both of his parents were born in NC.
Information on the parents and grandparents of Rachel Ward comes from Mike Patterson via the internet. "The Heritage of Stokes County North Carolina", published 1981 by the Stokes County Historical Society in conjunction with the Hunter Publishing Co. is the source of the Ward ancestry. Mrs. Cecil (Madeline) Watkins submitted this information found on pages 500-502. I have photocopies of these pages.
