Byron STANBERY

[]                             BYRON STANBERY    Byron was born Jan.1,1846 in Sandusky, Ohio the son of Moses  Andrew and Alena Mackey. Hedied Jan.3, 1930 in Deerfield, Mich.  Moses died when Byron was sevenyears old, leaving behind his  wife and two small children, Byron andsister Frances.    His mother remarried and they moved to Michigan. Heenlisted in  the Army Jan.12, 1861 at Whitford, Mich. He was 5'3", hadbrown  hair and listed his occupation as farmer. Believe he must havelied about his age as he was only fifteen, not the required  sixteenyears of age. However this was easily fibbed, as it was  common towrite the number sixteen on a piece of paper, place it  in the shoe, and then swear they were "over sixteen". Perhaps he  did this. Heserved with the Michigan 15th Infantry Company H  under Ist Lt.Charles Bisbee. He saw action in the Western  campaign includingShiloh, Seige of Atlanta , Sherman's March to  the Sea and the GrandReview of the Troops in Washington, DC. He  was promoted to Corporaland then to Sgt. At the Battle of  Corinth Miss. he was knocked downand run over by the wheel of a  cassion of a Flying Battery, injuriedin the chest. He was  discharged Oct. 13,1865 in Little Rock,Arkansas.    He returned home to Michigan. On Oct. 19, 1873 he marriedMariah Diver, daughter of John & Nancy Diver of Deerfield. They  weremarried in Petersburg by J H Gage, Justice of the Peace.    They tookup residence in a log cabin built on 40 acres of land  that lay in themiddle of section 35 northwest of Deerfield  behind the Diver farm.Children;  ASA born Nov.19, 1874 died April 25, 1918 Jackson MIMarried  Nellie Adell Siegfred, two children Max Elwood born Aug 31903  died Feb.2, 1984 and Marguerite born April 29, 1905 died  Dec.6,1987.
