11. JOHN HANON3 BRAY (DAVID2, PETER1) was born 1780 in Surry County, North Carolina, and died Bef. 1845. He married NANCY UNKNOWN. Notes for JOHN HANON BRAY: Most of Hanon Bray's land was on Cody's Creek, but in 1808 he bought 279 acres of land on from Littleberry Bray on Bull Run. He received a land grant from the state in 1794 for the original land on Cody's Creek. the grant contained 200 acres of land and cost 30 shillings per 100 acres. Hanon made a will in 1843 with the following provisions:
"Wife Nancy 60 acres of land which she may choose adjoining the dwelling house with all my household and kitchen furniture, excepting a piano, bed, and furniture to go to my grandson, Lewis Bray. these items were his mother's."
In another place he deducted $10 from his son, Milton's, part. Son Joel was to th have the l;and on the south near the Cooper Path, southeast of rockford Road, northeast by the creek to the apple orchard, then south to Hanon's line [Will Book, 4, page 206].

David Bray received a Revolutionary Pension. It shows that he was a Private and an Ensign and tha
t he served from North Carolina. He is shown on the pension roll of file #S or 2, 8106 National Arc
hives.
His family initially moved to Northampton County, North Carolina, where David lived until he was 21
. He then moved to Bute County, North Carolina andlater to Rowan County, North Carolina. During th
e Revolutionary War , David moved to Surry County, North Carolina. His service as  an Ensign was un
der Captain Robert Moore and Col. Martin. They went to Fayetteville against the Scottsfor three mo
nths. Next as an Ensign under Captain Moore and Col. James Craig, he marched to Flint River and fo
r nearly three months fought the Cherokees. He later served two additional tours in the War. He wa
s allowed a pension onhis application executed August 13. 1832, while a resident of Surry County
,North Carolina. His War Pension was #S8106
Early Brays in Surry County by EdnaBray Reece
in beginning the supplement to the Brays of Fisher River, which Ipublished in 1970 let me begin b
y telling you that any genealogy grows in twoway. One by increasing the number of new babies born
, and two by learning more about those already born.
I suppose this will be considered the latter, I have gained so much new data on those I have writte
n about in the first edition, I'll just about have what material I can use on the. For instance, th
e original book was to carry the family of David Bray Sr and his heirs. They were the ones who sett
led on Fisher River in Surry County NC. The main effort here was to sort out those of this particul
ar set from others of the same name whohappened to lice also in the same area of the same county
. By reading land records, deeds, wills, etc. and by consulting with the older members and corrspond
ing with others of the same heritage. I was able to put together a volume ofinteresting and authen
tic info. about David Bray Sr's family plus land and will records of several in the census record
s who were of other generations, orof other families of the same roots,
One of the outstanding names was Littleberry. Others were Joseph, Richard, Henry, John, Artha, an
d LeBannon. Then tooI had trouble identifing my own line to the others. This new supplement will s
eek to carry on the process of further identifing these other Brays.
Let usbegin with Littleberry.
The early deeds of Surry and surrounding counties showthat Littleberry Bray was probably the firs
t of the name to settle in the region of what is now Surry/Yadkin County. In 1792 Littleberry Bra
y took up a grant of land on the waters of Rocky Creek, in Iredell County, NC Most of his other hol
dings were in Surry County, on Bull Run a tributary of the Ararat River. He also traded land with t
he other Brays on Cody's Creek, and of course land on Fisher River.
Littleberry got on the First Federal census, 1790, Surry County, Salisbury District. In this count
y he listed one m over 167-m under 16, 4-f no/s. This would indicated a large family. I have identi
fied only one "Beloved Son, William. This quote comes from the deed transaction between Littleberr
y and Joel Bray when he sold his "Bull Run" holdings to him . Littleberry's last land transaction w
as when he sold lands on Cody's Creek to David BrayJr. he was last on the census record in 1810 a
s Berry Bray with 1-m, 5-16,1-m over 45, and one female 1 over 45.
When the last transaction was made, Littleberry was already in Ky. At that time Knox Co. but this m
ay have been beforethe counties were divided, for he was in Pulaski Co Ky when he appointed Pete
r Bray to have Power-Of-Attorney for his affairs in NC. (Deed BK, 3.p.169.
Hewas in Pulaski Co ky when all these other transaction were made.
Nov. 18 1823he and wife Sarah (her mark says Sary) bought 50-a land on the Waters of BuckCreek, P
ul Co for $350, from Giles Whitaker.
