Walter Rush Ellis was born April 29, 1879, in Dixon County, Nebraska, to Enos and Hannah Morgan Ellis and departed this life January 11, 1962 at the age of 82 years, 8 months and 10 days.
He grew to manhood on the farm homesteaded by his parents near Allen, Nebraska.  He went through grade school at Grand Central School and took further studies at Wayne State and University of Nebraska at Lincoln.
He was united in marriage with Manie Jones February 26, 1902 and to this union three children were born: Lee, Gladys and Marvin.  Manie passed away September 7, 1908.  On October  27, 1909 he married Nora Jones.  The children born to this union were Zella, Florence and Herbert.
He lived in this community all his life.  He was president of the Allen Co-Operative Credit Association and helped to change it to the Security State Bank in 1944.  He became the first prisedent of the Bank and served as chairman of the Board of Directors for many years.  He also served on the Elevator Board for 18 years on the school Board.
He was a faithful member of the Springbank Friends Church and was on the building committee for the present church edifice.  For 42 years he and Harry Roberts were members of the Springbank Quartet singing at community functions, funerals and churches, many times travelling to other towns for services.  When the Rough Rock Friends Mission was started be became vitally interested in its work and made a trip to the field in 1956.  Ever since he has carried a deep concern for and supported its work.
He lived an active and useful life until about a month ago when he began to fail rapidly and entered the hospital December 31.  During that week was cheerful and enjoyed hearing gospel songs and helped sing one.  His passing truly was stepping through an open door into the presence of the Lord he had loved and served so long.
He lost his wife, Nora, by death August 17, 1959.  He leaves to mourn his passing one brother, Rev Edwin Ellis of Waterloo, Iowa; a sister Mary Ellis of Sioux City, Iowa; six children and their companions--Lee and Ada Ellis of Portland, Oregon, Lylle and Gladys Rainforth of Grand Island, Nebraska; Joe and Zella McAfee of Greenleaf, Idaho; Florence and Sam Curry of Ponca Nebraska; Marvin and Naomi Ellis and Herbert and Edna Ellis of Allen, Nebraska; 14 grandchildren (one preceeded him in death); 2 great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
