From the "FirelandsPioneer" "In the thirties and fourties, Joseph Stanberry lived on apoint of land on the Milan road just opposite what is now thecemetery The point is made by the junction of Pipe creek and Sulphurbrook. Stanberry was a large, handsome man a relative of the greatlawyer,Henry Stanberry of Fairfield county, who subsequently beacameAttorney General of the United States, and of the Stanberrys ofFranklin and Licking counties. Joe Stanberry, as he was called, hadbeen one of the leading Democrats of Perkins Township but in 1840 hemade a visit to his distinguished kinfolks of central Ohio, andreturned to his home a Whig. Then it was that people said JoeStanberry had turned his coat. The leading Democratic boys thoughtthis the worst offense it was possible for any man to commit, and"turncoat" was hissed and yelled and vociferated through Perkinstownship by man and boy. But I want to say to you after the lapse ofsixty years that I think that Stanberry was about the mostindependent and manliest man in Eire county. He did what he thoughtwas right, and this is the thing for all men to do. The man whoallows conscienceless politicians to lead him by the nose on thepretext that he owes alligence to' a name and not to principle, maynot exactly be a fool, but he is exceedingly weak." It may be thatJoseph in 1830 already lived upon that land and that it was politicalboundaries that changed, Huron in 1830 to Eire Co by 1840.
