b. 11 January 1860; d. 19 March 1921; m. 17 December 1885, to SUSAN REBECCA SMITH, d/o G. M. de Lafayette and Lydia Ann (Fry). smith; b. 8 May 1861; d. 18 April 1948; both are buried in the Masonic Cemetery, Middleway, w. Va. William G. Bates was a landowner, and resided on his farm one half mile east of Middleway, W. Va. He was one time deputy assessor of Jefferson County, and was election commissioner and member of the Jefferson County Democratic Executive Committee. He was a vestryman of the Grace Protestant Episcopal Church of the Nelson Parish.
