Birth: 1881GreenwichWashington CountyNew York, USA Death: Dec. 12, 1971SimsburyHartford CountyConnecticut, USA Levings Hooker Somers, 90, a former Auburn resident and educator, died Sunday in Simsbury, Conn.A native of Greenwich, N.Y., he was the son of Warrington and Mary Somers, who came to Auburn in 1883. Mr. Somers was an 1899 graduate of Auburn Academic High School and a member of the Yale Class of 1903.He taught at Mercersburg Academy, Pa., before becoming headmaster of the Adirondack-Florida School. Before his retirement in 1954, he taught at Avon Old Farms School in Avon, Conn., and at the Pomfret School, also in Connecticut. He continued tutoring until last year.When World War I was declared in 1914, Mr. Somers was in Paris. He went to London and, under Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Hoover, organized a registration committee for stranded Americans.Mr. Somers was a member of the Protestant Episcopal Church and attended the Community Church in North Canton, Conn.Surviving are his wife, Madeleine Lane Somers of North Canton; a sister, Mrs. Eldrich J. Willis of Auburn; nieces and nephews.Memorial services will be held in North Canton. Y. took place in the chapel of the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York on Saturday, August 17. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Mr. Wollenweider. There were present Mrs. Stephen H. Dorr and Miss Virginia O. Dorr of Nutley, N.J., Mrs. Paul C. Ransom of Onchiota, N.Y., and Dr. Edward Perkins Carter of Baltimore.Mrs. Somers was graduated from Wellesley College in 1912 and has been associated for several years with The Dorr Company, 247 Park Avenue, New York City.Mr. Somers is the son of Mrs. Warrington Somers and the late Warrington Somers of Auburn. He was graduated from Yale in 1903 and is a member of the Yale Club and the University Club of New York. He is head master of The Adirondack Florida School of Onchiota, N.Y., and Coconut Grove, Fla., which was founded by the late Paul C. Ransom in 1903.Mr. and Mrs. Somers will make their home with the School at Onchiota after early September and at Coconut Grove, Miami, Florida, during the winter months.THE AUBURN CITIZEN, THURSDAY, AUGUST 22, 1929.
