My great aunt Clara and her brother Henry lived in the 50's and 60's in a house on 6th St in Ironton just 3 blocks from the Semet-Solvay Coke plant, a ferocious air polluter. I recall a job cleaning her rain gutters in the late '50's, scraping out coke sludge an inch deep. Clara was a cook at the Ironton St Joe school for many years, and her chewy sugared doughnuts and snickerdoodle cookies were my favorites.
