Sersved in the CSA, Alabame inf. had to leave his brother, Robert Rhea, when he was wounded and the Captain ordered the trooops to move forward. David returned after the attle and never was able to find hi sbrother's body. He mourned for his brother all his remaining life, and brought Robert's widow and three children to TX, when he returned to AL to find all he owned destroyed and he felt so bitter toward the czarpetbaggers and Reconstruction imposed on the South. He loaded up his mother and fahter, Louisa Rhea (McCleskey) and Lorenzo Dow Wood, along with his own family, Nathaniel Turk McCleskey and family and several others and they made the long trek to Tx, ending up on the banks of the Paluxy River in Dec 1869. They resided that first year in a dug out on the banks of the river until they could build log cabins.
