Horace Strong RAWSON

Horace Strong Rawson
Maternal great-grandfather of Archie Leon Brown

This story is a life of patriarch, Horace Strong Rawson, will be taken from many sources. Part of it being a biographical sketch and some of it by his granddaughter Samantha Delano Rawson (Rose) who was the daughter of Daniel Berry Rawson. The night child of Daniel Berry Rawson and met Nancy Boss Rawson, and also the last surviving child of her parents.
Horace Strong Rawson was born 15 July 1799, Scipio, Oneida County, New York. He was a son of Daniel Rawson and Polly Strong Rawson.
Nothing very particular transpired in my childhood only what is common until the war of 1812 Great Britain. 1813 the British came over Niagara River and burned Buffalo City’s and several other towns and drove the inhabitants off the frontiers, my Father and his family with the rest, but they again returned in 1819 my father and his family moved by water down the Allegheny River, to Pittsburgh thence down the Ohio River to the Falls, just below Cincinnati. We came very near being lost in a gale, Lord in his mercy served us.
I father and mother were goodly folk, reserved in all their ways. Father was a Baptist Preacher and lived up to the best light they had until their deaths. I father died 17 September 1824, in Washington County, Indiana, in the 54th year of his age, leaving my mother with 6 children, and I feeling in some degree, the obligation I was under to a kind and tender mother, done the best I could to relieve their wants. My mother died 16 May 1825, in the 35th year of her life in the same place, leaving their children on my hands provide for.
On 9 October 1825 I married Elizabeth Kaufman, daughter of William and Mary Duncan (Dunkin) Coffin. She kindly assisted me in providing for my brothers and sisters until they could take care of themselves.  We labored hard and was prospered much.
10 141 years of Mormon Heritage
we then moved to Randolph County, Indiana and bought a quarter of a session of land, and soon had a nice farm with suitable buildings and settled down to live as a heavy as we could be with light we then had, steadily pursuing our labors, endeavoring to best of our abilities the key the first commandment to multiply and replenish the earth.
In 1831 was baptized and church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints by Levi W Hancock and confirmed by Zebede Coultrin, receiving the Holy Spirit, Lord verifying his promise. I then does fight hard congregation to use of the latter-day work.
We soon took of the gathering spirit, being fully convinced that the Lord had said his hand the 7th time to gather His people. We learned the place of gathering in 1832 several other families, moved to Jackson County, Missouri, the land of Zion. There I was ordained a teacher under the hand of Wheeler Baldwin, president of the Branch.
We enjoyed ourselves for a while, very short time, filled with love toward each other, ranking as gifts and we improved on them to great extent. We were law-abiding citizens, so we can get into no trouble with the law but our enemies was spiteful so in 1833 persecution persecution commence an increase until we were forced to deliver up our arms and leave the County.
I saw Lyman Wight, who was our captain, delivery his sword through Col. Boggs, exclaiming, “take my sword or my head I do not care a damn which”, and we were ordered to set our guns down on the Temple lot against the fence where the great Temple is to be built and dedicated unto the Lord.  According to the edict of old Boggs the Saints had to leave Jackson County. Several families moved in Lafayette County, our 2 oldest children Mary and Olive and Daniel Berry traveled from Jackson County to Lafayette County barefooted. There without shoes during the whole winter.
While in Lafayette I rented 4 acres of land from a Mr. Barnard, worked, paid for the use of it and planted it. Prospects were fair for good crop but the mobs began howling in threatening and I was invited by Thomas B Marsh, was the president of the 12 Apostles, to cross the Missouri River. I tried to sell the crop to Mr. Barnard refuse give me anything, he knew he could get it for nothing.
In the spring of 1834 Bishop Partridge and Council who lived in Clay County requested the scattered Saints to gather there prior to the coming of the Prophet Joseph Smith with a portion of the strength of the Lord’s house to redeem Zion. We were obedient to the call.
When we left to move across the Missouri River into Clay County left her friend Ezra Barnet ---- a friend indeed. The people here for a while seemed very common to Joseph and his old band arrived which magnified in their eyes to degree the 200 swelled to 2000, and then the mob gathered on all sides, swearing that they would destroy Joseph and his band. They gathered in the night and got within a mile or 2 of his camp and the Lord interposed by sending his artillery from heaven in the form of an awful hailstorm, shivering some of their gun stocks to pieces, cutting through their caps into their skull, deflected in their purpose they gladly left the field, carrying their wounded. Lord verified his promise, “I will fight your battles.” Peace was restored again.
Here in 1836 I saw the prophet Joseph for the first time and heard him preach as I have never heard a man preach before, speaking of the redemption of Zion and the restoration of the scattered Israel, exhorting us to be faithful and sealed up the church to eternal life, and then returned to Kirtland. The church then moved to Caldwell County, near Far West and settled down, hoping to enjoy peace, but in 1838 the war commence again. A jealousy arose to the degree that all Western help boiled over.
Boggs, G. M. Hinkle (Hinckel), the old apostate, equipped the hellish plan for to destroy their fellow man. They called out 8000 men against Far West and Diamon. The noted Hincle betrayed Joseph and Hyrum’s, Rigdon, Wight, Baldwin and McRay into the hands of the enemy and also the rest of us, always stood in the past or served in some way and I pray God reward him according to his deeds.
Now Boggs issued his extermination orders - - old Clark determined to carry them out, and called a court-martial commit comprised partially of sectarian priests and sentenced Joseph and his followers to be shot.
Gen. Doniphan of liberty, Clay County, one of the martials arose and said, “gentlemen, this is a damned bloodthirsty inquisition and I will have nothing to do with.”
He started back to Liberty with his regiment which frustrated their calculations, old Clark declaring to us that we need not think of seeing our brethren again, “the die is cast, the doom is fixed, their fate is sealed,” but he did not know God knoweth how to deliver the godly out of the temptation and tribulations. Clark, Hinkle and the enemy and to reserve the unjust until the day of judgement to be punished.
In the winter of 1837 moved to the state of Illinois will find a more hospitable people, away from relentless hands of our persecutors. We settled in the City of Navoo or City of Joseph. Here we of privilege enjoyed ourselves very well for some time, feasting on the teachings of the servants of God, surely then we were exalted to heaven in points of privilege, but didn’t appreciate that day.
Each time time we moved I found myself building another house and start to plan and make a new start, always hoping to find security for my family.
In 1841 I was ordained an Elder under the hand of Charles Rich Simon Carter and in 1842 moved to lima, and was ordained a High Priest under the hand of Isaac Morley, President of the Branch and also chosen one of the High Councilman reside over the Quorum of High Priest of the branch and was eyewitness to many of the recorded facts pertaining to the sufferings of the Saints, although I wasn’t present at the awful martyrdom of the Prophet Joseph and Hyrum - - - awful indeed, law-abiding holy men of God, cast in jail, murdered in cold blood, on 27 June, 1844.
The fall of 1845 moving from our home in Nauvoo and our houses burned by Christians of Illinois so by spring we decided to leave the state go into the wilderness and see a home among Red men  man of the desert.
Septic Council Bluffs and Uncle Sam stretched out his hand and made a requisition upon us 500 men help but Mexican an unheard-of thing, free born American citizens, driven from our native land as exiles, but was performed to the letter. Daniel, the oldest son was one of the boys, and we, by so doing, proved our loyalty to the government.
In 1850 we moved to the Valley of the mountains and settled in Ogden City. I was rebaptized by Elder Glasco and at the organization of the Branch was chosen one the High Councilman, also was elected Selectmen and one of the City Council.
Here in the far off land, “Sweet Mountain Home, we enjoyed our holy religion.  The Lord making more fully unto us his ways, causing great joy in our hearts.
In the spring of 1855 we moved to Farmington, called preside over the High Priest of that Branch. In 1856 he moved to Payson by the Council of Present Young. Was elected one of the City Council, also called preside over the High Priest of that Branch. I have been in all the ups and downs of the Church from Jackson County, Missouri 1832 to 1859, 27 years, living 5 times from our homes, because we had embraced the fullness of the Gospel, free gift of God to man. Notwithstanding all the persecution tribulations we’ve had to endure.
The church is kept is steadily onward march, increasing in knowledge and numbers continually from 6 numbers in 1830 to over 100,000 in 1859, showing that the Lord is abundantly able to carry out his own Work. We were now organized into a territorial government with President Brigham Young as governor. We enjoy peace and tranquility in the land until Uncle Sam wouldn’t stand it any longer. In 1857 he sent and army of 13,000 men, the flower of United States, causing our quietude to cease and arranging affairs, on purpose, to oppose the work of God and his people. But if we are Saints of God we will be falsely accused, for the Savior said: “Then lift up your heads and be exceedingly glad, for so persecuted they the Prophets ‘s of God which were before you,” and the Lord overruled in this, causing an investigation to take place and peace was restored again.
So we will acknowledge his hand in all things I have not seen nor ear heard, neither hath it entered into the heart of natural man the blessings laid up store for them that walk uprightly before him for it is the spirit of our

religion, to keep the law of the land. If we keep the law of God we have no need to break the law of the land, is us to deal justly, have mercy and walk humbly with God.
So I will conclude by saying, that I have not written a half, what I have written is true.

Life of Horace Strong Rawson  15
It took all summer to cross the planes but they didn’t suffer the cold winter hardships as some of the brothers and sisters you came across in the winters. ‘s to further illustrate what a giant of a man Horace Strong Rawson was a decided go one step further in relating this talk given by him and Rawson reunion held in Ogden, Utah in November 1873, at the home of Orville and Sarah Urinda (Rawson)  Child.

He states:

This is day I have long desired to see  - - a family meeting of all my children and my children’s children, all that are alive now on earth. I feel thankful for this privilege. I cemented great blessing, not only meeting my children all those connected with our family. I desire to his genius all of you as my children hoping that there would never will be but that our love and friendship may continually increase George W like a threefold cord is not easily broken. And another thing I steam of great importance that we all belong to the church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints, the greatest boon of God to man. Therefore, my children, that may advise you - - let what may come on the earth to stand fast and that liberty when you are made free and you shall be free indeed, that is always keeping the commandments of God and the requirements of heaven - - then let me tell you, you never will apostatize and have to bear reproach of heaven and earth, cause great search your friends and lose your own soul’s salvation.

Remember this life is a probation yet it is long enough for us if we wish to be saved. A memory eternity is just before his when Michelle launch forth into a higher state of development where time is not measured to man, I would try to set before you the things as they are with me: new associations have been formed: new branches woven in individual care and responsibilities have any links with the fundamental household cause which is dear to each member. Paragraph here we are all, gray-haired sire and grandsire with my best of all God’s gifts to me, the partner of my life, share of my every Jory and hopes, consoler of my griefs - - my faithful wife, who had borne me the marriage of kindred hearts, brothers and sisters, husbands and wives, and all your children, all congregated once more at father’s house. There should be no timid spirit fearing to be seen or heard there, nor is the strength felt. One is not hire no greater than the rest, all alike are free and equal.

Many more chapters could be written but this should give one a tremendous insight to his character, we think all those who have contributed information to this chapter and book.
