John Cravens, son of Dr. Joseph and Mary Cravens, was born at Harrisonburg, Rockingham Co., Va., October 28, 1797. Began study of medicine under his father when age 19. Began practice some six years later. After practicing with father 2 years he removed to Hardy Co., Va. (now W. Va.) and practiced 1 year at Petersburg. Move to Franklin, Pendleton Co., where he remained ten years. In 1837 to Missouri, near Miami, 18 moths, then near Gallatin. Returned 1857 to farm 1 mile N.W. of Gallatin. He was a Brigade-Surgeon in Civil War (Confederate). Married Miss Rhuama Chaplin, of Rockingham Co., Va. Ten children, six now living: Caroline, m. John Leopard, of this Co.; Amanda, m. Maj. W. D. McDonald, of this Co.; Robert O., of Calif.; William of Springfield Mo., Jeremiah C., an attorney at Springfield, Mo.; Edgar H., of this Co., Elizabeth, m. Philip R.Wirt, d. in Gallatin, 1 March 1868; Joseph C., killed by lightning 28 May 1848; John, physician of Gallatin, d. 23 April 1876; Oscar, d. in Gallatin, 26 January 1855. The Gregg family came from originally from Loudoun Co., Va.; the Gibsons came originally from Lancaster Co., Pa. Major James Gibson, son of Andrew and Sarah (Hopkins). Gibson, was born 10 April 1776; d. 3 October 1847; his wife, Susan (Gregg). Gibson, was b. 3 December 1785; d. 9 April 1849. (R37).

b. 28 February 1841; d. 7 February 1926; unmarried. After the death of her parents she lived with her sister, Susan Gibson Kemper, at the Cedar Grove Estate, neat Warrenton, Va. She later acquired a home near Manassas, Va., and there lived with her brother, John Thomas Gibson, until a few weeks before her death. She died in Charles Town, W. Va. (R37).

Walter Shirley lived on a plantation on the Middleway-Charles Town turnpike, mid-way between the two places. He was on of the jurors who convicted John Brown in 1859 (See John Brown, by Oswald G. Villiard.) His death was due to an accident in which the horse he was riding plunged him into a tree.
