S/o John Robertson Thomson and Margaret Spencer Madden.
A paper written by Doris Elizabeth Hay, in 1949 conveys the following as
though written by her mother in the form of a dairy. The information was put
together through interviews with Emma Ballard Taylor of Paonia, Colorado,
sister of her mother, who had a "Very Keen Memory at 78" who had made jottings
of information when her father, Levi Balalrd lived with her.
"Summer, 1906 - The world ever changes and it is half a century since
mother started her diary, and when I read of her joys and blessings, the
heartache, the work building a family and home so far from her loved ones I
weep in humility and with love for one who was so noble and hopeful in spirit.
Mother passed away January 24, 1899, and I shall always miss her. She was a
fairthful Quaker for all her days, a loving Christian in her home, always
interested in others and their welfare. I bless her memory.
"When I think how hard it was in mothers day I am almost ashamed to admit
that I have carpets on the floors, beautiful kerosene lamps, a cutter and
fringe surrey, a New Home sewing machine and a heater in the parlor. My
parents had a team of oxen when they were married. We have a team of horses
brought from Kentucky by Father Thomson.
"We've had such wonderful times, we've driven to many a county fair, to
the Iowa State Fair at Des Moines which is always such a wonderful affair, with
exhibits, livestock and all that this great state produces, horse racing and
amusements and varous featured acts before the grandstand, with spectacular
fireworks in the evening. We've exhibited throroughred shorthorn cattle and
horses. Many families including ours camp at the fairgrounds for the entire
time. What fun it is sharing these days with old friends and making new ones."
"Summer, 1910 - Oneof the greatest trips Charles and I have had together
was taken down the Mississippi River in a steamer. Venda and Allen Kenworthy
went with us. We left from Dubuque. The river up is a special vacation
excursion. We made the trip froM Earlham to Dubuque in 4 days in Kenworthy's
new Red Jackson auto. We enjoyed the countryside and ride, except for the deep
ruts in the roads and the frightening of the horses. Most people thought we
are very brave to drive so far not being accustomed to a motor and event ho we
were tired and dusty in spite of our veils, dusters and goggles for the men,
the trip was very successful. And we know more automobiles will soon be
purchased.
The family moved from Earlham to Storm in Sept 1914. John Charles was a
travelling salesman selling Case Farm Machinery. He claimed to have been in
every town in Iowa. John Charles and Elizabeth celebrated their 50th
anniversary in Storm Lake in 1942.

One side of my family tells me that James J. Hiatt was a constable in MO. The other side of the family tells me he was also a famous auctioneer. I don't know if that was in IN, MO, NE or CO. I will fiind out for sure as soon as my other cousin gets back from holiday.
Most of my early HIATT information came to me from my cousin who lives in Arizonia... he is a grandson of James J. through his second wife, Emma Evelyn Burdge. Therefore, a lot of my info on her came from him and that is his father. If I can get more info on that side for you I will, just let me know what you'd like other then their dates which I have already sent for.
All of the information is accurate and can be verified. Most of the people in these families lived around a little town in Hayes Co., NE called Elmer, NE. Some lived in MO, IN, CO., ID, also ... A good deal of Emma Evelyn and James J. children and descendants are living in OR at this time. The exception of a few grandchildren and great grandchildren. I am in contact with one of my cousins who is from James J's and Emma Evelyn's son, Scott Orval's family and he is looking up dates for me at this time. So we both will have to wait until he can get those from his father. [Hiatt 1.FTW]
