Arby Brown HIATT

S-1900 Census, Hayes Co., NE, High Ridge Twp.
S-History of Elsie, Nebraska.

                             Arby B. Hiatt
My Father, Arby B. Hiatt was born near Bethany, Missouri, on December 3,
1880.  He moved to Nebraska when he was about seventeen years old.  He lived
the rest of his life in Nebraska except for a short time when he lived in
Oregon and Colorado.  Before he was married to Mother, Ferne Rees, he ran a
livery barn in Elsie that was located on the vacant lot just north of what is
now the H & B Insurance Agency.
I remember a story that was told to me that was rather amusing, Dad had
mother out on a date before they were married one Saturday night with a horse
and buggy.  He drove up in front of the livery barn and went to talk to a
gentleman friend and while he was gone Carl Schumacher went out and got in the buggy with Mother and drove off.  It turned out to be a good joke on everyone.
Dad and Mother, Ferne Reese, whose Father, C.M. Rees, taught school in Elsie in the 1890's, were married May 6, 1908.  They were parents of four children. The oldest daughter, Thelma, was born when Dad worked for Les Lovitt and lived on the place where George Lee, Sr., now lives.  Thelma passed away when she was twelve days old.  Berlyn (Hiatt) Hastings, Genevieve (Hiatt) Hastings and Vinson Hiatt complete the family.  Vinson is now deceased.
We lived in Palisade for about six years.  During that time Mother passed
away leaving three motherless children.  Dad worked on the section six days a
week and washed and ironed for us on Sunday.  We were seven, five and two years of age.
In 1922 he and his children moved to a farm three miles southeast of
Elsie.  He always had a good hot supper ready for us when we came home from
school. In later years he had a shoe shop in Grant, Wallace and Elsie.  In
Elsie his shop was in the back of the Equity State Bank building where the
present fire hall is now.  I used to go in and help him half sole shoes and sew them up.
He had failing health the last several years of his life and in 1936 he
entered the Tuberculosis Hospital in Kearney where he was a patient for three
years.  He passed away at the Kearney Hospital on August 29, 1939.

From Sherry, "I do have Arby's death date on a cemetery plot in NE.  I believe Palisade, Hitchcock Co., NE.  I will look that up, but I think he die din 1915,  will check that out too. ..[Hiatt 1.FTW]

4 children were born to this marriage.  One of the children died before their mother did.
