Bernice E. HIATT

Jones - Hiatt
One of the prettiest wedding of the season was held Sunday afternoon at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Hiatt, 1910 East Plum Street, when their daughter,
Bernice E., was given in marriage to Mr. George Herman Jones, east of New
Castle.  The ceremony was performed on the lawn, under an arch which was
transformed into a bower of pink and white roses.  Phomptly at four o'clock
Miss Margaret Hindman sang "Because," then immediately the ribbon girls, Misses
Gaynell LaBoyteaux and Wilma Hoover of Liberty township, who are the former
pupils of the bride, came from the house, making a ribbon aisle for the bridal
party Miss Alta Grace Hiatt, sister of the bride played Lohengrin's Wedding
March while the groom and bride's party marched to the alter.  The groom's
party, which preceded the bride consited of Rev. John R. Walter, the groom
attired in black Charles Russell Martin of Dayton, as his best man, attired in
dark grey and Amer Hunter of Lafayette as groomsman in dark blue.  Following
came the bride and her party, the bride leaning on her father's arm marched in
dainty white crepe....

Bernice Hiatt Jones was born on a farm in Greensboro Township and lived her
entire life in Henry Co., becoming a respected and well-known citizen of Henry
Co., and New Castle.  She was one of a family of nine children of Roscoe and
Rosanna Willoughby Hiatt, a family much interested in music.  Music was the
most important recreation in their home.  As young adults they organized their
own family orchestra and performed out of state as well as before local and
county audiences.  Bernice played second violin in the orchestra.  Music
continued to be a lifelong interest to her.
After the family moved to New Castle, Bernice attended school here and was
graduated from New Castle High School.  She attended Terre Haute Normal School
and taught school for a number of years in Henry County.
On July 23, 1916 Bernice Hiatt was married to G. Herman Jones.  Bernice and
Herman celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1966.  Most of their
married life was spent on their farm in Liberty Township where they reared
three sons -- Charles R., Robin H., and Herman WIlloughby.  Bernice was a
thrifty and good farm homemaker.  She was also interested in rural activities
and became the first social and educational leader of the Henry County Farm
Bureau.  She remained a member of this organization to the end of her life.
A birthright Quaker, Bernice Jones was a dedicated member of her church,
where she taught Sunday School classes for twenty years.
Bernice was a very sociable woman and was a member of many clubs and
societies.  She became interested in wider club activities in the Henry County
Federation of Clubs and in The Sixth District Federation of Women's Club, later
holding the office of the President of both orgainzations.  At one time she
served as secretary in arousing interest in others to become member of this
organization.  For a number of years Bernice was a volunteer worker for the
Henry County Cancer Society.
Bernice Jones was a good wife and mother; her three sons attest to her
devotion.  She always inspired them to live up to their hightest potential and
their achievement were her greatest satisfaction.
Of her many talents perhaps the most outstanding was the almost forgotten
art of China painting.  She has exceptional ability in arranging, enlarging,
and adapting designs that appealed to her; this produced striking and beautiful
effects.  In her later years she pained a set of twelve large service plates,
each with a different and intricated design covering the entire plate.  These
are now heirloom pieces.
A lively interest in the affairs of the world about her, and in people, a
desire to take an active part in all activities, friendliness and kindness,
these were outstanding characteristics of Bernice Hiatt Joens.  She was a good
neighbor and a good friend to many.
"Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is above rubies."
(Proverbs 31:10)
