Maxine Virginia DOWNS

Maxine was a very special and lovely person.  She had a hard time with lots of sorrows and disappointments but always was honest, faithful and a very spiritual person.  Grandma Maxine would also love to have the children visit her, she would make cookies, cook lunches and have them on her lap reading.  We would visit her for Christmas and her favorite thing would be to read the story of Christmas to them and have a few songs.  We often went to see her in Ashland, Stephanie was still a baby when Grandpa Warbritton was living and they were always so proud and anxious to see us and their grand daughter, Stephanie.  Grandpa was a carpenter and had built half the houses in Ashland, he remembered the time and use to tell stories of the Indians and point out where he had seen them camping with their whole villages.
Grandma had a very sad life as she was older, especially after her husband Ralph died.  Ralph was a very kind and loving person also and treated her so kindly.  They had a very lovely place before he got sick and they moved into the old folks home, after he died, she stayed there until just a few months before she died.  She was always active with many friends, everyone in the apartments were her friends and she was always doing little things to help them.  The kids were always a treat to the people there that loved to see them.  Maxine saw most her brothers and sisters die before her, her son, Don, her grand daughter Tanya and her husband.  She was not able to see most her brothers and sisters for years, they were scattered in Iowa and Colorado.  Tanya and I were able to visit a few of them and they were all very spiritual and good people and I am sure our lines cross a few times but we had not gotten much genealogy done before Tanya left me.  We had visited Marsheltown and found her grandparents grave, the one that was in the Civil War and buried there in the soldiers home graveyard.
The kids had gotten to see her this past summer, 1999, she was sickly then but she was able to recognize and love them, so greatful that they remembered her.  I loved her also, she was always so loving and supportive of me and the kids and was so disappointed in the divorce but never turned against me.  She wanted me to see her also this summer but because of the hard feelings in the family of Tanya, I didn't go, but do wish I had.  There would not be a single unkind thing about this grandmother, she suffered faithfully, was always a spiritual and loving person in spite of her life of pain.  How I admired her and see in her the same qualities of my own mother and how sad I feel for her over her life.  We always made sure that we got her picture with the kids and those will be a treasure for them always.  She surely will be one of those special spirits in Heaven and a true candidate of God's most precious gifts and highest awards in Heaven.  She had come from a large family, at least one was a minister that I had met at Tanya's funeral.  I wish we had more of her genealogy at this time, it will be left to the children to complete the best they can.  I do know that Grandma Maxine Downs, Davis, Warbritton was a very special and lovely spirit that serves to all mankind an example of Gods desires for all of us to be.  She was loving to all her family, her brothers and sisters were always in her prayers.  She was never bitter or complaining of those that hurt her, she was fun to talk to and how I wish the kids would have listened more to her stories of her childhood for I do not know much of those stories either to perserve.  She came from a humble and loving family, full of tradition and love for each other, what more can be said of her.  She now is left to those that come from her, to preserve and love, to follow her example and know that she is a choice spirit of God that rests now with her.  This 25th day of September, 1999.  She died this morning about 6 AM in the Hospital with Ellen at her side.  Rebecca called and spoke to Grandma Peggy, Rebecca was so broken up, she has such a soft and loving disposition and for her to loose another person she loves is so hard on her and all the children.  I am sorry Grandma Maxine, that we were not always as loving and forgiving as your example.  Larry
