CARL CHRISTIAN BORUP - HIS ANCESTORS ANDDESCENDANTS
In the extreme northern part of Denmark in the county or Amt as it iscalled of Hjorring is Aasted; a small town, even now, but at the time ofthe beginning of our story, it must have been a mere village. The familyof Peder Christian Pedersen and his wife, Mariane Johanne Jensen livedher when their son, Peder Borup Pedersen was born on the 20th of January,1824. Peder, the father, was born at Ugilt, the 5th of April, 1790 anddied at Aasted 11th of December 1877. He was married 25 October 1818 toMariane Johanne Jensen, who was born 19 August 1798 at Mosbjerg,Hjorring. We know nothing of the children of this couple, except the sonPeder. In the same town lived the family of Christen and Karen JensenChristensen. Christen Christensen was born 27 Jun 1794 at Flade,Hjorring and on 2 September 1816 he married Karen Jensen, who was born 10January 1792 (the daughter of Jens Jensen and his wife Maren Nielsen) atGaerum and died at Aasted 28th February 1848. We only know of the onechild, Christine, who was born 8 February 1826 atAasted.
Peder and Christine probably knew each other all their lives, at least weknow that they were boy and girl sweethearts and they were planning to bemarried. But one day a handsome young seaman came into port, and hepromptly fell in love with the beautiful Christine, and she lost herheart completely. No one will ever know what her parents had againsthim, but they refused to allow them to marry, in spite of their pleading. No one knows what the lad's name was, but after many a stormy meeting heleft Aasted and was never heard from again. Peder's love was the realthing, and later when she turned to him, he took her into his heart andthey were married 21 July 1850. Although Christine was always a true andloving, faithful wife, it is known that she never quite forgot the boy ofher young romance. Peder and Christine had a family of nine children, the oldest was Carl Christian, born 29 September 1850 at Stenhem,Hjorring. Later these good people heard the gospel and accepted it.They soon prepared and left for Zion with two sons and threedaughters.
They sailed from Liverpool, England, 16 May 1861 on the S.S. Monarch ofthe Seas. They were nine weeks crossing the ocean. Hardship, illnessand sorrow traveled with them, for on their arrival in New York, theoldest girl, Hannah, aged five, sickened and died. Then when theyreached St. Louis, Missouri the second girl, Amalia, also died. But thatws not the end of their grief, for on the plains, the baby, Hanne, diedand had to be left by the trail. Nothing could stop them, for faith andcourage sustained them.
However, the strain was a severe one and finally Christine became too illto keep on. Until this time she had walked every step with the ox team, now she had to be put in one of the wagons to ride the rest of the wayinto the valley. They reached Utah with the John Murdock Company inSeptember. (Some records say September 1861 and some say 1862). Theyarrived in the valley with only their two sons, Carl Christian andChristian Severin, left in theirfamily.
They settled in Goshen where four more children were born to them. John,Lena, Sarah and Peter. In the early 79's they moved to Panguitch wherethey lived until the death of Peder in November, 1878. Christine thenreturned to Goshen and lived until her death 26th of December1895.
After leaving Denmark, the family dropped the name of Pedersen and usedthe name of Borup. Just where the name fits in the family history is notknown, but it is presumed that at an earlier date, the name is connectedwith the town of Bourp, a few miles fromCopenhagen.
Christine was a very beautiful, gracious lady - hospitable and king. Itis told of her that she never let even the most casual caller leave herhome without sharing her Danish cakes andcoffee.
Carl Christian Borup grew to manhood in Goshen. Between the years of1866 and 1871, he made two trips across the plains to help othercompanies into the valley with ox teams. On one trip he nearly lost hislife by drowning but was saved by a man namedPratt.
Across the sea, events had been taking place which were to bring Carl andhis future wife together. The missionaries had also found the family ofBenjamin Thomas, a miner of Swansea, Wales. This family consisted ofBenjamin Burk and Mary Williams Thomas. They were married in the Parishchurch of Llandgwyd, Glamorganshire. Mary died in 1828. The son, PhilipBenjamin, is the one who is our ancestor. Philip was a collier; born 28December 1827 at Luscherne, Carmarthen, Wales, and as a young man workedin the mines below ground. But he worked his way above ground to becomea boss and a capable steel worker. He became a manager of steel works, both in Wales, and in England. Philip married on the 14th of May 1848 toMargaret Bynon, daughter of David Bynon and his wife Ann Davis. Margaretwas born 25 December 1827 at Preed-Batha, Pembroke, Wales. This couplehad a large family of twelve children, all born in Wales. Caroline, whowas born 1 April 1855 at Pontadoria, South Wales, was the oldest daughterand had to assume many responsibilities at a very young age, as hermother suffered from asthma which made her almost an invalid most of herlife.
Soon after their conversion, the Thomas family moved to Utah in 1870.They too settled in Goshen and Margaret died 6 November 1872, less thantwo years from their arrival. In contrast to the Borup family, theThomas family traveled in style for they were privileged to ride inbox-cars. Philip was always a devoted church member and when the companyoffered him an opportunity to return to Wales and take u his old job, herefused. He placed the gospel above material things, and the privilegeto raise his family among Church members was the first consideration. Healways loved to hunt and fish and in his youth was quite an entertainerwith his ability to hypnotize. After joining the Church, he felt thatthese things were out of harmony with the principles of the Gospel and heleft off the practice. After the death of his first wife, he married aMrs. Lizzie Laird, who was a good wife. Philip suffered a stroke whichcaused him to be bedridden for fourteen years before he died and shecared for him faithfully as long as her strength permitted. Then he wastaken to the home of his son John in Goshen, where he died 10 May1901.
Carl and Caroline were brought together through the activities of theChurch. Caroline was a great favorite among the younger set, and Carlhad to win her from many admirers, who had the same ambitions in herdirection. But Carl won out and they drove to Salt Lake City and weremarried in the Old Endowment House on 3 November 1873 by Daniel H. Wells,Counselor to President Brigham Young. The trip which today can be takenin a little over an hour, took them 3 days, a distance of about ninetymiles. When they returned to Goshen, they settled at Warm Creek andstarted to raise their family of four daughters and six sons. Carl'smain business was blacksmithing and for several years the family movedback and forth from Goshen to Eureka, where he sharpened tools for theNorth Star, the Blue Rock and the Jessie Knightmines.
In 1878 he spent a year hauling ore from Eureka to Panguitch. Carlworked on the first railroad into Utah; hauled the first hearse intoPeoche, Nevada from Panguitch, and assembled the first grain-binder inthe Goshen country, the only man who understood the process at that time. When silver and lead dropped to such a low level during the Clevelandadministration, he purchased some teams from a William McCoulough and dicontract work for he railroad. He contracted work on the LemingtonCutoff across the Great Salt Lake. When that work was finished the crewsand teams were moved to the Boise Valley where they had a contract towiden the Phillis Canal near Nampa. There were two more jobs on the sameCanal and then they moved to Boise in 1903. The Borup Company hauledlumber from the mills and rock from the quarries north of town. Theyhauled the rock that is the Catholic Church at 8th and Fort Streets, partof the stone in the State Capitol Building, and also for part of St.Alphonsus Hospital. In those days the roads in town were mere cowtrails; except for a few blocks of sidewalk in the main street - about adozen blocks in all. The Borup crews built the first turnpike south ofthe river, which is now our beautiful Capitol Blvd. Before this time theroad south of the river was almost impassable in the spring of the year -now it was a year around crossing.
The eldest son, Charles, was the first missionary to be called to servehis Church from Boise. He was called to the Northern States Mission in1906. In 1906 the Borups and the son-in-law, Samuel Worthington, homesteaded land on Camas Prairie, newar Fairfield and Soldier. Theother son-in-law, John Taylor, remained in Boise and did freighting fromBoise to Atlanta and Pine and Featherville,Idaho.
On the prairie the folks bought a sawmill which they operated along withtheir farming; also a steam thrasher. The future looked bright and rosyfor them until four successive years of frost ruined the crops and we allwent broke, except for those who had gone into the cattle business. Thefamily then turned to Boise in 1915, with the exception of David whomoved his family to Acequia.
Carl's church activities were many and varied. He was baptized inDenmark by his father in 1861. But all emigrants had to be rebaptized ontheir arrival, and then he was baptized by Bishop Price of Goshen. Hewas ordained a deacon in 1863, advanced to a teacher and then to a priestin the Aaronic Priesthood. When he went to Salt Lake City to be married,he was ordained an Elder by Elias Smith. He was set apart as a HighPriest by Jonathan L. Page, President of the Nebo Stake. In 1898 he wassustained as counselor to Bishop William McCoulough of Knightville. Heserved as a Ward Teacher, as a teacher in Sunday School and many otherplaces. Caroline Borup was counselor to the first Relief SocietyPresident in Boise when it was organized in1904.
Utah and the Mountain West owe a great debt of gratitude to men of thetype of Carl Borup. Study pioneers, who devoted their lives to theChurch and service of their fellowmen -- men with the broad-visionedcourage who laid the foundation for this great inland empire. To the menand women that carried on when hostile Indians threatened the settlersand had to be conquered -- Men who fought bitterly for their veryexistence and conquered the desert. Had it not been for people of thiscaliber, this western country would not be what it is today. Carl was aleader in civic and ecclesiastical affairs and held many positions oftrust and responsibilities; ever active and true to hisconvictions.
All who ever had dealings with him said his word is as good as a bond.As a family we have every right to be proud of our nobleancestors.Carl and Caroline Borup lie side by side in the Morris Hill Cemetery atBoise, Idaho. (Carl died 1 October 1926 and Caroline died 16 Feb 1935.)I am sure that when they rise to their judgment they will hear thesewords, Well done my good and faithful servants, enter into the joy ofthy rest.
