Antoine EMERY-CODERRE

The following is from Quebec, Canada Website and translated by Shirley Ann Lucier Beezley, Feb. 1999

              ANTOINE EMERY DIT CODERRE

Aymery or Emery, origin of the name is Germanic. Signifies very active or a real worker.

On Aug. 16, 1643, Thomas Eymery, son of Meimy Emery and of Marguerite Pascault, was baptized.  Antoine was born at Sarrazac, today in the district of Lanouaille de Nontron, in La Dordogne, which was formerly called Perigord, France.

At the age of 22 years old, Antoine Emery, was called to serve under the flag of his country.  In the Spring of 1665, he was part of the company of the old and tenacious Captain Pecaudy, Lord of Contrecouer, in the celebrated regiment of Carignan.  His companions had already nicknamed him Coderre by then.

On the 13 of May, the sailing ship "La Paix", with a capacity of 300 tons and diverse sorts of ammunitions of war, set sail from La Rochelle. The sea voyage was long, but normal.  On Tuesday, 19 Aug. 1665, La Paix landed at Quebec with 200 troops on board.  The companies of La Colonelle, Maxmy, Sorel, and Contrecouer sailed in La Paix.  The flag of all the troops is the same.  Blanc seme de fleurs de lys d'd'or, (white sprinkling of flowers and gold fleur de lis.)

In 1666, Antoine participated in diverse compagnes and enterprises by the regiment and by his company.  Several years later, some of the company returned to France.  Antoine Emery dit Coderre, decided to remain in Quebec because he loved the country side.

In Nov., 1670, Antoine Emery was living in Vercheres.  On the 13th of April 1674, he married Marie DeVault, but she died the 16th of Dec. 1687.

At the age of 44 years, Antoine married on a Saturday, 5 Jun. 1688, Marie Anne Fevreau.  She was 18 years of age and the daughter of Pierre Favreau and Marie Benoit.

Marie Anne and Antoine enriched the country with nine children.  The oldest was named Antoine, baptized the 4th of Jun. 1690, at Boucherville.  He married the 10th of Feb., 1716, to Marguerite Brunel. She was born in 1694, the daughter of Jean Brunel or Brunet, dit LaSabloniere and Marie Madeleine Richard or Richaume.

Like a good soldier, Antoine hung onto life until the age of 72 years and died in 1715.  Marie Anne Favereau married again to Joseph Circe.  She was buried at Contrecouer on 3 of Apr. 1737 at the age of 69 years old.

         ANTOINE EMERY:

17 Aug 1665.  Arrived in Canada to Soldier.
