George Washington Shields was called Carter Shields.
George Washington Shields served in Company B, Sixth Tennessee Infantry under a Colonel Cooper from 1862 to 1865. He was wounded severely at the Battle of Shiloh when a minnie ball tore away part of his side and lower back, crippling him for life. After his marriage, he went first to Missouri and then to Kansas but returned to Cade's Cove in 1903. In 1910, he bought land and built what is now called the Carter Shields Cabin. He moved from Cade's Cove in 1921. He had no children.
