A. Randolph Shields was a teacher. He received a bachelor of science degree from Maryville College and his master of science and doctor of philosophy degrees from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. At the time of his retirement in 1978, he was professor of biology and chairman of the department at Maryville College. He also worked summers as a ranger-naturalist at Smokey Mountain National Park. He was an avid genealogist and historian and wrote "The Families of Cade's Cove, 1821-1936," "The Descendants of Robert and Margaret Emmert Shields" and "The Cade's Cove Story."
