Jacob Alexander SHIELDS

Sherman D. Gibbs reports that Dr. Jacob Alexander Shields attended school at Chattanooga until his family moved to Keith, Georgia. He attended Professor Bryan's Academy at Ringgold, Georgia and graduated in 1903 from the Chattanooga Medical College of Grant University. He did postgraduate studies in 1910 at Johns Hopkins University and in 1923 at Tulane University. He began his medical practice in Walker County, Georgia, riding horseback with his medical equipment in saddlebags. He later used a horse-drawn buggy and, in 1910, bought a Hupmobile, one of the first automobiles in Walker County. In 1920, he moved his family to LaFayette, Georgia so the children could get a better education.
