Valentine (or Wall) HATFIELD

Historical Notes:

(1) Valentine Hatfield was the progenitor of the present day Hatfields of West
   Virginia, he settled on Horse Pen Creek, Mingo County, West Virginia, and
   moved to the Roughs, of Guyan, Wyoming County, West Virginia in 1855.

William Anderson (Devil Anse) HATFIELD

Historical Notes:

(1) William Anderson (Devil Anse) Hatfield served in the state militia before
the War.  He joined the 45th Virginia Infantry ("Logan Wildcats"), in 1862,
rising to the rank of 1st Lieutenant.  He resigned his commission in 1863, and
formed a partisan ranger company which operated along the Virginia-Kentucky
line (the unit included several McCoys.)  Many books were written about the
details of the feud, most of them not entirely trustworthy, and seldom
accurate.
