John (Byrnside) BURNSIDE

(1) John Byrnside was one of the first justices appointed to the first court on
21 May 1799.  He was also a member of the first grand jury which tried two
cases of felony charges -- Jack Hunt (free colored) and John Kincaid.  Both
were acquitted.  In that same court he had to sit in on two cases of assault
and battery.

John was also the first surveyor when that section of Greenbrier became Monroe
County, but had been deputy surveyor since 1785 in Greenbrier.  he was also one
of those responsible for the formation of Monroe County from the larger
Greenbrier.

John lived on the family homestead immediately south of what is today Union,
West Virginia.

John is described in Monroe County's history as: "he lived on the large
plantation immediately south of Union which was deeded him by his father...For
his time he was a very wealthy citizen, his estate included seven slaves and
personalty to the amount of $5,037.19

(1) Married to James Byrnside Jr, by the Reverend John McCue.

George BYRNSIDE

(1) George Byrnside was Court Martialed for being absent without leave from the
Confederate Army, and was subsequently shot!


Jeptha BYRNSIDE

(1) Jeptha Byrnside was tried for desertion from the Confederate Army, and was
shot!
