The log cabin had been moved across the road and used for a livestock barn down on the Stoney Creek in Surry Co., N.C. near the Ararat River also and Holly Springs District N.C. (Mt. Airy was the town they traded at 5 Mills away).
Ephraim built his 2 room house when he was 20 years old. His father had
sold him the land. They married in 1910 and very much in love and happy. He
was in a family of 10 children. His wife Bertha was in a family of 9 children.
He joined the church when he got grown. Mother got lonesome when daddy was reading the Book of Mormon and D & C. He told her to read it too. She did read all day in the D & C and was thrilled so much she caught the spirit and learned very fast and wanted to be baptised. It seemed real true to her. That made Daddy happy.
He was a hard working farmer. Grew most of their food and also watermelons, tobacco to sell. They had 2 children but wanted more. They adopted a little 7 years old girl. She had 4 children, had twins, on Valentine day. Later she died in 1947. She had Epilipsy spells a very lovely sweet girl had a strong testimony. My parents taught us well. She was buried in Temple garments. In 1938 my family and 2 more brothers families, 22 in all went to Salt Lake City and to the Manti Temple. Brother David L. Hiatt and wife my cousins carried us in an old school bus. We did work for all our families and a lot of work for our ancestors also. We stayed 2 weeks on the temple grounds and visited also the Hiatt out west. We were gone from home a month (4 weeks) one week to go 1 week to return. We camped each night at the very same place both ways we had a grand reunion out there with all the Hiatts at Benjamin, Utah. We recieved our Patriarchal Blessing while there by Brother Anderson.
My Daddy was a Sunday School Supertendent for 8 years an ward teacher
Leader. He did a lot of missionary work, converted several people. He was a
good ball player, could have been on the league, but decided not to. His
friends kept after him every Sat to pitch ball longer then he felt like it.
He was a good friend and neighbot to all, honest, true, loved by all. He
was very cheerful and jolly. He loved his family a lot. He was a good
gardener brought in bushels of tomatoes to can just before real ripe to save
them to can.
My mother was a good neighbor and teacher to my 6 children. She helped my to raise my children when I worked. My husband Barney was a devoted member of the church and good father.Joined LDS in 1913
