(1) Warinus de la Strode first came to England in 1066 in the retinue of
William the Conqueror, as one of his warriors. It was also claimed that he was
in the Battle of Hastings, on October 14th, 1066, when King Harold was slain.
Tradition says that Warinus de la Strode was of the family of Geofroi, Duke of
Bretagne, (son, grandson or nephew), as he was allowed to bear the Duke's Arms,
i.e., Ermine, on a canton sable, a crescent with a five point estoile.
