Pierre COMEAU

From"Acadian Descendants" by Janet Jehn 1972 page 37 filed under Hebert
From AGE vol X #3 doc C-3-4:"Pierre de Comeau (II) was the son of Jean (IV) & Marguerite Ocquidem. He was born in 1606, and is the founder of the American branch of the de Comeaus. He came to Acadia in 1632 with the expedition of De RAZILLY. He helped to found the Port of la Have River and at DeRAZILLY's death, went, in 1635, with the new governor, D'Aulnay de CHARNISAY to rebuild the fort at Port Royal (now Annapolis), the original fort having been destroyed by the English in 1613. Pierre married in 1649 Rose Bayols, daughter of Nocholas of Dijon. Nicholas BAYOLS (a/k/a BAYOL, BEHOLLE, BAYOU) came to Acadia in _______ with (illegible) P__ZELIN on the "St. Jehan." Rose NAYOLS died in Port Royal before 1585, and Pierre de COMEAU died in 1690 in Port Royal."

From AGE vol X #3 doc C -3-4, page 76:"Bona Arsenault on page 727 of his second edition of 'Histoire et genealogie des Acadians' lists Marie Comeau's parents as Pierre and Jeanne BOURG, not Rose BAYOLS"
    From FCAR, doc B-107-6, v 7, # 1 spring 1979, "Census of Port Royal, Acadia, 1678":Lists Pierre Comeau widower, 12 cattle 1 compass 4 oxen 14 acres.
The French were the first to settle permanently in North America when the establishment in Acadia was founded in 1604, by Sieurs De Monts, Champlain & Poutrincourt.  Most of their men would not survive the first winter spent at Ile Sainte Croix in Passamaquoddy Bay and in the Spring of 1605 Virginia was founded by the British in 1607.  Six years later they had thousands of settlers who assumed right of wrong that in virtue of the discoveries attributed to John Cabot and his son, Sebastion on the coasts of Newfoundland, in 1497 & 1498, the French establishments in the East were encroaching on the rights of the Crown of England.

In 1613, a fleet left Virginia under the command of Captain Argall, took over Acadia and totally destroyed this young colony.  It would only be in 1629, that the King of England would send Scottish settlers to Acadia . aaaathis is the first time it took the name of Nova Scotia.  (New Scotland).

The Scottish settlers were soon decimated by illness & hardships.  Only seventy would be left in the colony when Acadia was returned to France, 29 March 1632, under the Treaty of St. Germain en Laye.  Cardinal de Richelieu, mimister of King Louis XIII, sent his cousin, Issac de Razilly to Port Royal as Lieutenant general of the territory of Nouvelle France dit Canada and Governor of Acadia.

His objective was to re-establish the Acadian Colony which had been under Scottish influence for a decade.  Rasilly settled 300 soldiers and colonists that he commanded from from LaHeve.

First official document showing Pierre in the new world, was in the 1671 census of Port Royal, in Acadia.  It showed where he already had 16 horned animals, 22 sheep, and 6 arpents of cleared land.  When compared to the other families on the census, we could conclude that he had been established in Port Royal for several years.  These clues and his age, would lead us to believe he settled the land sometime between 1632 and 1654.  There were around 50 other families at that time, in Acadia during that period, before the transfer of the colony to the British in 1654. By 1671, France took passession of Acadia again and held its first census.  Pierre and Rose Comeau were there at that time.  Pierre was a barrel maker, a necessary skill, as ships were transporting fish and other goods to France in barrels.  Pierre was listed as 88 years old in the census of 1686.

Rose (LeFebre) BAYOL

From "Acadian Descendants" by Janet Jehn 1972 page 37 filed under Hebert
widow of Martin LeFebre died between census of 1671 and 1678; Bayols or Bayon.

Antoine COMEAU

Some say that Antoine disappears after 1686 census.  Some say he would have gone to France.  No documents to confirm this rumor.

Jean De Comeau DE CREANCEY IV

From "Cajun Roots" by Beverly Theriot Coleman
From AGE, vol X #3 doc C-3-4 page 39:"Jean de Comeau, Ecuyer, Lord de Chassenay (a/k/a de Chastenay), was the son of Jean (II) & Catherine COLARD. He married Marguerite OCQUIDEM the daughter of Benigne, Lord de la Choselle, etc."There is no proof that Pierre was the son of these 2 people of Nobility, because he was only a lowly barrel maker.

According to Father James Comeau, o.p., our ancestor was the son of Jean de Comeau de Creancey, seigneur de Chassenay, and of Marguerite Ocquidem de la Choselle.  Father Comeau found a named Pierre de Comeau born 1606 born to these people.
