“JOHN W. HIETT - Was born in Jefferson Co., Virginia, November 11, 1824, son of George and Lydia (Mulnix). Hiett.
“The family, who were Quakers, moved from Virginia to Seneca Co., Ohio, during the early bodyhood of John Hiett. They returned to Virginia when he was fifteen years old.“He attended Jefferson Academy from which he graduated and became a teacher. In 1851 he returned to Ohio and became a student at Oberlin College. He became superintendent of the public schools in Fremont, Ohio, where he organized the graded school system.
“Later he studied and taught in the normal department of Ohio Wesleyan University at Delaware, Ohio, and afterward served for ten years as one of the trustees of that institution.
“In 1860 he established the Elm Grove Normal School at Maumee, Ohio, which later became the Central Ohio Conference Seminary. In 1864 he gave up teaching because of poor health, and moved to Toledo, Ohio. Here he became a prominent real estate dealer and remained in that business the remainder of his life.
“He was a member of St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Toledo where he became active in all branches of church work.
“He married Mary E. Beecham, a daughter of Joseph and Mary Beecham who were early English settlers of Ohio.
“He died in Toledo in 1893. There were four children: Ella F. Hiett, Irving
B. Hiett, Oliver N. Hiett and Russel M. Hiett.” (R112).
