(1) When Francis Browning and his family removed to Virginia, they settled in
the beautiful section now known as Elk Garden, Russell County Virginia. Here
they lived and died. They were both buried in a family plot near their home
where he had lived for eighty years and died at the age of 101 years, 7 months,
and 24 days. Their gravestones were well marked and legible in 1950.(2) Francis Asbury, the Pioneer Methodist Bishop, made frequent stops at the
home of Francis Browning and in his journal wrote of him "Another distinguished
man was Mr. Browning, He had a large family and trained them well. He was a
man of considerable wealth..."
