Captain Jacob Tipton was killed by Indians at St. Clair's defeat Nov. 4, 1791 when he was about 24. Revolutionary War, Capt.

Bought  his first land from his father in 1824. He was a community leader, and justice of the peace for the district. His house was designated as the voting place when the Sixteenth Civil District was established. He was known to be a bit" hot-head". He usually started fighting before asking question.

Notes for Jacob Tipton: Jacob Tipton was a Captain in the Revolutionary War. He raised a company and marched from Eliazbeth and fell at St. Clair's defeat. Tipton County in Tennessee was named for the young patriot Captain 30 years after he was born. This paragraph appeared in the Knoxville Gazette: December 17, 1791: Knoxville, December 17, from a correspondent. from good authority we learn, that Capt. Jacob Tipton, who went from Washington, in this territory, with the troops raised of the new levies, when the unhappy battle between the troops of the United States of America, under General St. Clair, and the Indians began, went instantly with the party under his command, and joined a party of Kentucky militia, who were first engaged. An officer asking him why he had joined himself to a party of militia when he belonged to the regulars--He replied ' i came here to fight, and I will do it." Not long afterwards, when the firing became very warm, he received a ball in his breast, which passed through him.. In his condition he stood some time animating his men; but soon overpowered and weakened by the wound, and bleeding inwardly, he fell. Turning round and looking at his men, he said, "My brave fellows, I am a dead man; do you fight on, and bravely do all you can for your country." and instantly expired. Thus fell Camp. Tipton, an instance of true magnanimity-- great even in death.

Jacob was a Captain and was killed at St. Clairs defeat... Tipton County Tennessee was named after Captain Jacob about 30 years after he was born.

He served as Captain; enlisted March 19 1791. In his Company were Jonathan, John and Williasm Tipton. He was impatient to get to the fighting, as his compny seemed slow in getting to the front. "I came to fight and I will do it".  He fell mortally wounded and his last words were "My brave fellows, I'am a dead man; do you fight on bravely; do all you can for your county". Copied from the Knoxville Gazette, December 17, 1791.
He seemed to have had a premonition of his fate, for as he rode from home he turned and called to his wife, saying that if he is killed on the expediton, that she rename their William, as Jacob.
His wishes were complied with and their son became, General Jacob Tipton in carrying out the family name.
Captain Jacob Tipton was killed, November 4, 1791.

Some Authorities claim that the childs name was not William, but Armstead Blavins.
