John A. Ellington wrote in July of 1999 that "He was at the battle of Shiloh, I belive, when fording a river he fell from his horse and almost drowned if not for another soldier who happened by. This soldier took hold of his hair and dragged him to safety. It is said he never cut his hair again but would put it in a bun under his hat. This continued to his death. Robert McLemore had it verified from one of his relatives he had a conversation with."
