1777 - b Abbeville Dist SC
1800 - md in Anderson Dist SC
1805/07 - moved to Livingston Co KY where he rec'd land grant of 400 acres from
the state, located on Crooked Creek, abt 5 or 6 miles NW of Marion, the
present seat of Crittenden Co. [PICKENS, p. 27]
1818 - moved to Lawrence Co MS
1833 - moved to Carroll Co MS
1865 - died in the home of his son Israel, in Holmes Co., MS.

-----------------------------------

PICKENS FAMILIES OF THE SOUTH, by E. M. Sharp:
 p. 62. "William Gabriel PICKENS arrived in KY in 1803 receiving a land grant
for 200 acres on Clay Lick Creek, March 29, 1803. The old PICKENS farm is 3
miles southwest of Marion."
"William PICKENS, nephew of William Gabriel, son of Capt. Joseph PICKENS came
in 1807 and received a grant for 400 acres on Crooked Creek. In 1818 he went to
Mississippi."

THE PICKENS FAMILY, by E. M. Sharp:
 p. 14. "William...moved to Livingston Co., KY about 1805. He received a grant
for 400 acres of land on Crooked Creek in the same community where lived the
HENRYs, DOWDLEs and William Gabriel PICKENS, all from Anderson Co., SC.
[Williams' land abt 5 or 6 miles NW of Marion, the present seat of Crittenden
Co., KY - p. 27].
In 1818 he sold out and moved to Lawrence Co., MS where he resided until the
opening of new lands in North Mississippi. He then moved to Carroll County and
lived where Vaiden, MS now stands. He died in the home of his oldest son, Isael
Wilson PICKENS in Holmes Co., MS."
 p. 16. "Between 1800 and 1805 William Gabriel PICKENS, John PICKENS, William
PICKENS, James DOWDLE, Margaret DOWDLE PICKENS, and Samuel HENRY, as well as
several families of the DICKEY and HILLHOUSE connection all went to Livingston
Co., [KY] and settled on grants on Crooked Creek in the present Crittenden
County, about six miles northwest of Marion KY.
... William PICKENS was the son of Capt. Joseph and Eleanor PICKENS.He later
sold out in 1818 and went to Mississippi eventually living in Carroll and Holmes
Counties. James DOWDLE had married Ann PICKENS also a child of Capt. Joseph and
Eleanor PICKENS."
 p. 27. "...Leaving Kentucky sometime between 1818 and 1820 William PICKENS and
his entire family loaded everything they possessed on flat boats on the Ohio
River, and floated down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to Natchez, MS and went
across land to Lawrence Co., MS, a new county being opened up. There they met
many kinfolks and acquaintences from South Carolina as well as Alabama who had
come across to this county. Here William PICKENS and family resided until 1830.
A deed in Livingston Co., KY shows that William PICKENS of Lawrence Co., MS,
conveyed 400 acres of land on Crooked Creek to Richard POSTLEWEIGHT of
Livingston Co., KY.
About 1830 or soon after, William PICKENS and family moved to Carroll County
Mississippi, locating near the site of the town of Vaiden MS. It was then named
Shongalo. Shongalo has since become the town of Vaiden. The Illinois Central
Railroad came through this community and land was donated by Dr.
Vaiden and the town moved down to the railroad and assumed the name Vaiden.
The Presbyterian Church at Vaiden has a brass plate on the wall to the memory of
old Shongalo Pres. Church and Martha PICKENS is listed among them..."
 p. 28. ..."After the death of Martha, William PICKENS is said to have made his
home with his oldest son Israel Wilson PICKENS, and when he died in 1865 was
buried in the private cemetery on the plantation of Israel W. PICKENS."

E. M. Sharp records found in the Mississippi Archives:
"William PICKENS, born in Abbeville District, SC Dec 28, 1777. He died in
Richland comunity, Holmes Co., Mississippi, May 26, 1865. He was the son of
Captain Joseph PICKENS and wife Eleanor (PICKENS) PICKENS.
 m. Martha ANDERSON on August 25, 1800 in Anderson Co., SC. ...
William PICKENS is buried in a small family cemetery on the place formerly
owned by his son Israel W. Pickens, about two miles from old Richland Methodist
Church in Holmes County, [Mississippi]. His tombstone has recently been moved to
the Richland Cemetery, and placed in the PICKENS lot.
About 1800 or soon after, William PICKENS and Martha moved to Livingston
County Kentucky, settling in what is today Crittenden County, Kentucky. Their
oldest son was born in Kentucky in 1803 near the present town of Marion, KY.
William PICKENS moved to Livingston County, KY in company with other relatives
and friends from Anderson County, SC. His uncle William Gabriel PICKENS (brother
of his mother, Eleanor PICKENS), and others.
Leaving Kentucky sometime between 1816 and 1820, he sold his property to a man
named POSTLEWAITE and moved to Lawrence County, Mississippi. No doubt the family
moved by going down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to Natchez and then across
the country to Lawrence County. This section of Mississippi was being newly
settled by many people from South Carolina and Georgia. While in Lawrence County
William PICKENS served as a Justice of the Peace, as did his son Israel W.
PICKENS. Two daughters were married in Lawrence County.
In 1830, or soon after, the family moved to Carroll County, Miss. and settled
at the old town of Shongalo, which today is Vaiden. Israel W. PICKENS, eldest
son of William and Martha PICKENS became the first sheriff of Holmes Co.
, and owned considerable property in that county around Goodman, Pickens, and
Richland. After the death of Martha, Wililam PICKENS in old age appears to have
lived with his son Israel where he died and was buried in the PICKENS family
cemetery near Richland.
 Children of William and Martha: [Israel; William L; Ruth A; Eleanor; Andrew J;
Martha; Samuel A]
There were probably other children who died in infancy or early childhood.
No family bible record of this family has yet been discovered. The above list is
compiled from known facts about the family and traditions."
------------------------
"...Jane PICKENS HENRY was the daughter of Andrew PICKENS and Margaret DOWDLE
PICKENS of Anderson Co., SC. The said Andrew PICKENS was a brother of William
PICKENS of Carroll and Holmes Co., Miss. Both of them were sons of Capt. Joseph
PICKENS and his wife Eleanor (PICKENS) PICKENS, and grandsons of Col. Andrew
PICKENS and John PICKENS of South Carolina...."

Sharp records sent to Terry McLean by Elwin T. Pickens, 1997:
"...[William was buried] in a small family cemetery on the place formerly owned
by his son Israel W. Pickens, about two miles from old Richland Methodist Church
in Holmes County, [Mississippi]. His tombstone has recently been moved to the
Richland Cemetery, and placed in the PICKENS lot."

Sharp, THE PICKENS FAMILY:
 p. 27. "William PICKENS is buried in a private PICKENS cemetery which was on
the farm of his son Israel Wilson PICKENS, about two miles from Richland
Methodist Church in Holmes County, which is located on the highway between
Lexington and Pickens, MS. There is also a PICKENS lot at Richland church, and
later generations were buried there. Recently the tombstone of William PICKENS
was removed from the private PICKENS cemetery and erected in the Richland
PICKENS lot."

EMAIL MESSAGE - Kenneth Henderson to Bob Henderson, 16 Feb 1993:
"...Here's the info I have on Rev'd Robert HENDERSON: Rev'd. Robert HENDERSON
(Presbyterian Minister), b. 1781 in NC.
m. Margaret PICKENS (daugh. of Abrem & Elizabeth PICKENS)
Rev'd Robert HENDERSON was born in NC and later moved to Williamsburg District
SC where he met Margaret L.  PICKENS. In 1806 Robert and Margaret moved to Maury
Co., TN with Margaret's parents. Robert and Margaret were among the heirs to
Abrem and Elizabeth PICKENS' estates.
Rev'd. Robert HENDERSON started a Presbyterian Church and School in Maury Co.
I also have a ref. that says he was a Lieutenant in the 27th Regiment of the
Tennesse Milita, Aug. 1, 1809. He fought in the War of 1812.
Rev'd. Robert HENDERSON in Sept. of 1812, worked on a road from Samuel SMITH's
cotton gin to the Crossing of Flat Creek.
Rev'd Robert HENDERSON is referred to in the book" THE GOODSPEED HISTORIES OF
MAURY, WILLIAMSON, RUTHERFORD, WILSON, BEDFORD AND MARSHALL COUNTIES OF
TENNESSEE, published 1886, reprinted 1971. Ref. is under Maury Co., Mt. Zion
neighborhood. Original settlers from Williamsburg Dist, SC.
Rev'd Robert HENDERSON sold his land in Maury Co. and bought land in Lawrence
Co., AL (ca. 1835).
On a 1832 tax list for Maury Co., Rev'd Robert HENDERSON had 93 acres.
There is also a reference to Rev'd Robert HENDERSON in a publication called
'Family Research' compiled by Mildred Roberts 1973. The family record is on p.
88. I have not seen this ref. but was told it exists. I don't know where to find
it! In this ref. it made a reference to a Bible record having a James Edgar
HENDERSON b. May 16, 1714 with no other info. Could this James Edgar HENDERSON
be by Rev'd Robert HENDERSON's grandfather? The reason I think this is possible
is because Rev. Robert HENDERSON had a grandson named James Edgar HENDERSON b.
June 22, 1874...."

E-mail message dated 27 Dec 1996 from Ted Noye to Jack Reynolds:
"... Laura Davis' mother, Huldah, was married circa 1845 in Carroll Co., AR to
an Abram DAVIS. They had two daughters, Mary Isabelle Davis, born 1844, and
Laura Annice Davis who was born in 1846, both in Prairie Township. By the 1850
census, Huldah and her two daughters were living in Huldah's parent's house down
in Williamson Co., TX, with no Abram Davis around. I am assuming he must have
died.
Huldah remarried to James Eden WILLIAMS in 1851 in TX, then they all moved to
CA in 1854. James raised Huldah's two daughters as his own. The 1860 federal
census shows Laura still living at home (listed as a Williams). Laura married
Ezekiel E. Calhoun on 17 Oct 1860 in Tulare Co., CA (I have a copy of the
marriage entry, if you'd like it. She is listed as Laura Davis on the marriage
cert.).  My direct line of descent lies with Huldah and James first born son,
Milam Williams.
I did not know that daughter Jesse had applied to DAR, I'll have to go search
out those records..."

Sketch written in 1891 on Ezekial, taken from the book "History of Central
California":
"  E.E. CALHOUN, the son of Patrick CALHOUN, and a second cousin of John C.
CALHOUN, was born in Kentucky, at the junction of the Cumberland and Ohio
Rivers, in the year 1825. Patrick CALHOUN settled in that State in the year
1785. He married a daughter of General PICKENS of Revolutionary fame (sic:
actually daughter Eleanor of William PICKENS), and by her had a family of 13
children 7 sons and 6 daughters. Mr. CALHOUN was a contractor by occupation and
carried on an enourmous river business, being considered a rich man in his time.
Ezekiel Ewing CALHOUN, the subject of this sketch, passed his childhood and
youth in the western part of KY. He was educated in Louisville, graduating in
the law department of the university there in 1850. He also attended a full
course of medical lectures in that institution. Among his medical preceptors may
be mentioned Doctors GROSS, CALDWELL, MILLER, DRAKE and other distinguished
physicians and surgeons of our day.
After practicing law at his old home one year, he crossed the plains to CA,
arriving in San Bernardino County after a journey of 6 months. He soon leased of
Governor PICO the famous Santa Margarita ranch, located in the northern part of
San Diego County, and for three years successfully conducted that large estate.
In 1854 Mr. CALHOUN came to the San Joaquin valley, camping in various parts of
this then barren land. He is distinctly a pioneer in this locality, as
subsequent events clearly show.
Moving to Visalia in 1855, he had much to do with the shaping of events in the
early history of that town. He was made County Clerk of Tulare County in 1855,
and for 3 years held the office of County Judge. In 1866 Kern County was
organized and the Judge was its first District Attorney. The offices of County
Surveyor, County Auditor and School Superintendent, he also held at various
times. For a short period prior to 1884 he resided with his family in Santa
Clara County, and in that year he moved to Fresno, living there until 1887, when
he came to Selma, his present residence.
The Judge, though somewhat frail, is still in the possession of his faculties
and is regarded an excellent legal authority in the community. Well informed
thoroughly conversant with every detail of the early settlements and occupation
of this valley, a fluent with his society is most enjoyable, and those fortunate
enough to be included among his friends will not soon forget the many
interesting anecdotes and reminiscences he relates.
Judge CALHOUN was married Oct. 17, 1860, to Miss Laura DAVIS, a native of the
South, by whom he has had 7 children, all living. Their family is an
exceptionally bright and gifted one. The three elder daughters are graduates of
the State Normal School at San Jose. Eleanor H., the eldest, is now a resident
of Paris, where she has lived four years. Possessing marked dramatic ability,
she has attained a very high degree of success on the French stage, and also in
London, where she first studied for a few years. Jessie, another gifted
daughter, has for some time been Professor of Elocution at the University of the
Pacific, San Jose, recently resigning that position to fill a wider field of
labor.
