Dempsey GATLIN Sr.

 From Research ingmykin@aol.com 22 Feb 2008.
Short Biography of Dempsey Gatlin.  From "The Biographical Album of Jerreson and Van Buren Counties, Iowa".  published 1890, notes on James GATLIN, including this about his father, Dempsey: "His father, Dempsey Gatlin, was a native of North Carolina and resided in South Carolina, Georgia and subsequently in Tennessee.  He served in the war of 1812 under Gen. Jackson and participated in the battles of Pensacola and New Orleans where a most signal victory was gained.  On the return of peace he took up his residence in Alabama, where he remaind five years when in 1822 he became a resident of Sangamon Co., IL.  Nine years later he took up his residence in Tazewell County, of the same state but after thirteen years, in 1844, we find him located in Washington Co, IA.  Purchasing land from the Government, he there engaged in farming until his death, which occured on the 26th day of May, 1854.  He there engaged in farming until his death, which occured on the 26th day of May, 1854.  He had learned the trade of saddle making and coopering, but engaged in agribultural pursuits during the greater part of his life.  His marriage took place in Tennessee some time prior to the War of 1812 - the lady of his choice being Miss Sarah MARTIN, whose parents were natives of North Carolina.  Her death occurred in 1845 and the following year Mr. Gatlin wedded Sarah Hiatt who was called to her final rest near her husband passed away.  By the first union were born thirteen children, eight of whom grew to maturity, namely Sina, now deceased; Hardy, who is living in Carthage, Liberty Co., MO; Nathan B., who died in Illinois; James now deceasd; Nathan B., who died in Illinois; James of this sketch; George W. deceased; Isaac, who enlisted in an Illilnois regiment and died during the service near Nashville, Tenn.; Dempsey and Sarah, deceasaed.  The other members of the family died in infancy.  The father of the above mentioned children was a man of many excellencies of chacter, whose consistent Christian life won him the high regard of all with whom he came in contact.  In his earlier years he was a member of the Baptist Chrch but later united with the Christian Church.  He was an ardent admirer of his old General, Andrew Jackson, and supported the Democratic Party until 1840 when he cast his ballot for William Harrison."

We visited Skidmore, Mo. Nov. 24, 1991 and spoke with Mrs Paul, (Velma)
Hansen, who had submitted information on the Hays family.  She has a lot of
information available for us.  See also The Past and Present History of Nodaway Co., MO.  published 1910.  Page 1005.
Milton Ray Hays lived 4 miles west of Skidmore, MO.  He was the son of
James and Laura Young Hays.  He lived with an Uncle John G. Hays for awhile.
He is highly praised in this book which offers a great deal of the Hays family history.  He moved to Maryville and was a farmer and worked in Real Estate.  Alice Knepper Hays was born in Ogle Co., Ill. and was the youngest dau. of Hiram and Fredrica Stull Knepper.  She had come to Mo. when about 2 year sold.  The family located in the SE part of Atchison Co., Mo., bought a farm and has lived there ever since. (1910)
The parents of Alice came to Mo. about 1878-1880, according to the history of Nodaway Co., Past & Present, 1910.
