"Andrew PICKENS, Jr., Governor, SC, 1816-1818" by Wm. H. Dumont: Andrew
PICKENS, Junior, son of General Andrew PICKENS of Revolutionary War fame, was
Governor of South Carolina from December 1816 to December 1818.
While Governor, he kept a separate record of the various amounts of money he
paid out from the Governor's Contingent Fund...He required a receipt of all
sums paid out. The receipts were recorded or pasted into a leather-bound book
...The Governor was addressed as: "His Excellency," "A. PICKENS, Jr.," and
"Col. PICKENS, Jr." The remainder of the article is a listing of the receipts

p. 41. "Andrew PICKENS, Jr. served one term as Governor of South Carolina.
During the War of 1812 he was a Lt. Col. of the 10th Regt. of U.S. Regulars on
the Canadian Border. Was in command of a Regiment to defend Charleston in 1814.
Elected Governor of SC in 1816 and served 2 years, the legal limit in SC for
a Governor at the time. He was an Indian Commissioner and treated with Indians
as did his father. Bought land at Augusta Georgia and lived there a while,
later moving to Dallas County Alabama. He owned land in Edgefield Co., SC,
later the plantation of his son, F. W. PICKENS. He went on a trip to Pontotoc
County, Mississippi where he died on June 24, 1838. His body was carried back
to South Carolina and buried at the 'Old Stone Church' in Pendleton District,

On page 50 of PICKENS FAMILIES OF THE SOUTH published in 1963, I had assigned
David PICKENS and his wife Susannah BUYERS PICKENS as a son of Andrew PICKENS of
Giles and Fayette Counties in Tennessee. Later data furnished by this family
showed that David PICKENS, the son of Andrew PICKENS of Giles and Fayette was a
younger man and he went to Natchez, Mississippi to live where the census and
county records prove his family.
On Page 66 begins the family of William and Jane HAMILTON PICKENS of Maury
Co., Tenn. Their children given in the book are as follows:
1. John G. PICKENS.
2. Willialm Hamilton PICKENS.
3. Matthew Galaspy PICKENS
4. Margaret J. PICKENS RICHARDSON
5. Elizabeth Ann PICKENS MEECE
6. James S. PICKENS.
In MAURY COUNTY COUSINS, BIBLE AND FAMILY RECORDS, published by the Maury County
Tennessee Historical Society, there is publihsed a copy of the bible record of
the above William Hamilton PICKENS. Among those listed as died is the name of
David PICKENS, died May 10, 1813. This has been entered by William Hamilton
PICKENS. There is also noted in his bible death record the name of Margaret
RICHARDSON, died Feb 15, 1844. This is the above Margaret J. PICKENS RICHARDSON
who had married Willis RICHARDSON in 1815 in Maury County.
There are several deeds in the early Maury County Deed books made by Susannah
PICKENS, which involves the family of William PICKENS of Maury County, showing
that she had close dealings with that family rather than the family of Andrew
PICKENS of Giles County, Tennessee. The following abstracts of those deeds
constitute further proof.
MAURY COUNTY TENNESSEE DEEDS:
- Book E, page 162, Maury Co., Tenn. March 6, 1813 David SHANNON of
Williamson Co. Tenn. makes deed to William PICKENS of Maury Co. Tenn for the sum
of $300, the south side of Duck River on the waters of Globe Creek, a fork of
Fountain Creek, a total of 100 acres. Witnesses: A. M. CALLAHON, Matthew G.
PICKENS [NOTE: Matthew G., David's brother, would barely have been of legal age
by 1813? - tmc]

Susannah PICKENS makes deed to Valentine CALLAHON for 50 acres for the sum of
$250 land running along the dividing line of the tract which William PICKENS
bought of David SHANNON. Witnesses: Will BUYERS, John G. PICKENS, A. M.
CALLAHON.

William PICKENS conveys to Susannah BUYERS PICKENS, both of Maury Co. Tenn. for
the sum of $250, 50 acres bordering the land of William PICKENS bought of David

Joel BURROW for $80 paid by Susannah PICKENS, conveys to her 100 acres on Globe
Creek. Witnesses: William BUYERS, John G. PICKENS.

Susannah PICKENS deeds to Valentine CALLAHON, 50 acres on Globe Creek for the
sum of $100, land lying on David SHANNON's boundary. Witnessess: William BUYERS,
John G. PICKENS, James S. PICKENS.

Joel BURROW, for sum of $265 transfers to Susannah PICKENS, 60 acres on Globe
Creek including land and the wagon road, the Holly Spring. Registered, July 3,
1820.

The above deeds prove that Susannah BUYERS PICKENS, widow of David PICKENS,
lived in the Globe Creek neighborhood, which is the same community in which
lived the family of William and Jane HAMILTON PICKENS. The John G. PICKENS,
James S. PICKENS, and Matthew G. PICKENS who witnessed deeds above were all sons
of William and Jane HAMILTON PICKENS and we believe brothers of David PICKENS
who died 1813. The BUYERS who witnessed the deeds were brothers of Susannah
BUYERS PICKENS.
There are very scanty records in the Maury County Probate Records concerning
the estate of the deceased David PICKENS. An inventory was made of his estate on
July 23, 1813 and the amount reported was $775.03.
The estate was finally settled on Feb 19, 1815 by his widow Susannah PICKENS,
her brother William BUYERS, and John G. PICKENS, brother of the deceased.
Tradiiton passed down among descendants of William PICKENS is to the effect
that after arriving in Tennessee from South Carolina, David PICKENS was almost
drowned in a river and later died as a result of the accident.
In correspondence with Mr. Joe Mack HIGHT of Nashville, I find that he is the
person who transcribed the bible of William Hamilton PICKENS for the Maury
County Historical Society. He is of the opinion that David PICKENS was a son of
William and Jane HAMILTON PICKENS and a brother of William Hamilton PICKENS.
Other members of the family concur in this.

This affidavit is made to correct an error made in a genealogy which I published
in 1963 called THE PICKENS FAMILIES OF THE SOUTH.
The immediate purpose is to produce proof for Mrs. Minter W. FERGUSON of 402
West Fourth St. Waxahachie, Texas, that she descends from William PICKENS and
his wife Jane HAMILTON PICKENS of Maury County, Tennessee...

I, E. M. SHARP, therefore declare by this paper, my belief that an error was
made in the book in 1963, and that David PICKENS was indeed a son of William
PICKENS, who was a Revolutionary soldier in South Carolina and is so cited by
abundant proof as given in my book, PICKENS FAMILIES OF THE SOUTH.
Further proof of her descent from William PICKENS can be furnished by Mrs.
Minter W. Ferguson.
