From Ann Shultz:
"...we suspect that he was in Franklin Co., Ala. for the 1830 census and then
came into Mississippi after that. His name appears on a list for Jury Duty in
DeSoto Co. Ms in 1838 and then we find nothing more about him. We also believe
that he was in Tennessee (Lincoln Co) for the 1820 census. We are wondering if
he may have been in Maury Co. prior to that..."Posted By: Malinda Conner Fairall

Terry, My cousin and I have continued to research our Pickens/Gillespie
connection and feel that our Alexander Gillespie did marry Isariah (Izviah or
Ezviah?) Pickens. I can't remember if I mentioned it or not but in the course
of speaking with an elderly cousin (81) of ours it was discovered that she has a
Quilt with the date 1810 and the name EZZY on it. This lady referred to this
quilt as belonging to her Pickens GGG-grandmother (could be wrong on the # of
greats). This lady is also descended from Alexander Gillespie. Neither my
cousin or myself has seen the quilt but we hope to both visit with her soon and
do that...

"Terry, Many thanks for the immediate response. Here is just about everything
I have on family of John Watson and Peggy Pickens (except for descendants of
Sallie Watson and F. M. Hardison - my line - where I have quite a large amount
of data):
[gives 4 children of John and Margret]
Most of this information comes from Fred Hawkins, "Maury County Cemeteries," in
the section on the Watson (P.) Cemetery. Some data on Peter Pinkston Watson
comes from book called "Century Review, 1805-1905, Maury County, TN."
Hawkins says there were 10 children, but I have names for only four.
Following is paragraph from "Maury County Cemeteries":
"John Watson was born near Salisbury, Rowan Co., N.C. on 18 Sep 1783. His
father, believed to have also borne the name John Watson, and his mother, whose
name has not yet been discovered, were taken from him while he was at a very
early age. It is believed that Indians attacked the family home and that the
children were hidden and escaped capture or death. The young boy, John, was
indentured to one Peter Pinkston -- a name he later gave to a son -- until he
became of legal age. He learned from Pinkston the shoe-maker's trade. On 9 Mar
1809, he married Marget "Peggy" Pickens of S. C. They, along with the Pinkston
family, migrated to Maury Co., Tenn. sometime thereafter, settling in the
eastern part of that county. They then proceeded to rear a family of ten
children. Peggy died on 27 Dec 1844 and John followed in Sept 1859. Although
their graves are not marked, this is the traditional cemetery of both the Watson
and Pinkston families and without a doubt it is on this hill top that they were
buried when their earthly days were completed."
A footnote refers to "Watson and Allied Families" by Douglas and Virginia D.
Tyree, Historic Maury, Vol. XIX, 1983-84, p. 49. I am yet to obtain a copy of
this article, but should be able to find it in the Clayton Library here in
Houston.
A couple of additional items:
The spelling Marget (instead of Margaret) which I have used here is exactly
the same as that used by Hawkins in his book. Note that the same spelling is
used for Marget Jane Watson, daughter of John and Peggy. The latter is in a
marked grave in Watson cemetery, so I think this name is on the stone. (I have
not seen the stone yet, so I don't know, but Fred Hawkins is usually pretty good
about accurately transcribing cemeteries.) Do you think this is just a
misspelling?
The fact that John and Peggy Watson named their first daughter Lydia gives
considerable credence to the notion that Peggy's mother was Lydia Harrison, but
somewhere I think I have some data that suggests that Lydia Harrison is too
young (or married Jonathan Pickens too late) to be Peggy's mother.
Sorry I can't offer more at this time. LaneyDate: Sun, 24 Oct 1999 From: "W. L. Littlejohn"

Terry, I have only recently become aware of Pickens in my ancestry, and
searches led me to your posting to the Pickens family genforum in March of 1998.
My fourth great-grandmother is one Marget "Peggy" Pickens, b 15 Feb 1790 in
SC, d. 27 Dec 1844, married 9 Mar 1809 John Watson, b. 18 Sep 1783 in Rowan Co.,
NC, d. Sep 1859, Maury Co., TN. Both are buried in the Watson Cem. in Maury
Co., TN.
It has been suggested to me that Peggy was the daughter of Jonathan Picken,
Jr. and Lydia Harrison, but such information as I have been able to find about
this couple indicates to me that this is probably not the case.
Perhaps this Peggy fits in somehow with your William and Jane. If so, I would
love to hear from you.
I will be happy to share what little I have on Peggy and John Watson and their
children.
Thanks and best regards, W. Laney Littlejohn, Houston, TX

Reply to: Mary Handy- 1700s- DE, (MD?) by Dave Taylor:
Dave, Mary Handy was the daughter of Col. Isaac Handy and Anne Dashiell. She was born in Salisbury, Somerset Co, MD on 8 NOV 1733 and died 6 JULY 1801 in South Carolina. She and Rev. John Harris I (b. 29 SEP 1725 in MD --at least one source says Wales--, d. in 1790 -- his will was probated 5 APR 1790) were married about 1759. They had six children:
- (1) Dr. Handy Harris (b. 7 JAN 1760 in Somerset Co, MD, d.8 JUN 1805 in
Pendleton Dist. SC)He married Anna Irving on 7 JUL 1787 in SC.
- (2)John Harris II (b. 6 DEC 1762, Eastern Shore of MD, d. 24 APR 1845 in
Pendleton, Anderson Dist. SC) He married Mary Pickens, daughter of Gen. Andrew Pickens and Rebecca Floride Calhoun, on 22 FEB 1784.
- (3) Anna Handy Harris (b. 10 FEB 1765 in Somerset Co. MD, d. about 1827-1830 in Lincoln Co, TN) She married Elijah McCurdy about 1786.
- (4)Thomas A. Harris (b. 11 MAY 1768 in Somerset Co, MD, d. 12 AUG 1851 near Decatur, DeKalb Co, GA. He first married Mary Davis and second married Martha Moffett.
- (5) Elizabeth "Betsy" Harris (b. 15 FEB 1769 in Somerset Co, MD, d. in 1827 in GA) She married Joseph Irving on 10 OCT 1788.
- (6) Nathaniel Harris (b. about 1770 in Somerset Co, MD, d. before 1777 in SC) Mary's grandfather was Samuel Handy, born in England about 1650. He came to America about 1665 as a Redemptioner. On 31 March 1679, he married Mary Sewell in Somerset Co, MD. They reportedly had 21 children but only 14 have been accounted for. It would appear from various things mentioned in his will, and other recorded documents, that Samuel was a tobacco grower and regularly shipped tobacco to England in his own ship.
Mary's father, Isaac, was 15 years of age at the time of his father's death. In addition to his considerable inheritance, he later acquired a large estate, lying chiefly on the Wicomico River. He built a stately home which he called "Pemberton Hall" near the present-day town of Salisbury, Wicomico Co, MD. It still stands today and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The grounds around Pemberton Hall -- some 200 acres -- are now a historical park. Among his many credits, Isaac was the founder of the town of Salisbury. It was laid out by a charter granted in 1732
and is situated at the head of the Wicomico River.
A book about the Handy family (including information about Mary's family) was published by the Clements Library, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48109. It can be ordered by writing or phoning them. The hardbound book contains 812 pages and includes pictures of Pemberton Hall, pictures of some of the Handy family, copies of wills, etc. The book was published in 1992 but the information for the book was collected by Isaac W.K. Handy between 1851 and 1878. The title and author: ANNALS AND MEMORIALS OF THE HANDYS AND THEIR KINDRED by Isaac W.K. Handy, D.D. ISBN #1-881606-00-7

Israel (d. 1849, NC) and Martha PICKENS. There is conflict regarding validity
